STAR WARS™ Episode I Racer

STAR WARS™ Episode I Racer

Game crashes on startup without error
Title. Games crashes on startup. No error, it just tries to launch, then shuts down. Windows 10.

Tried compatibility mode etc. Tried running as Admin. Tried turning off Steam Overlay. Tried using dgVoodoo.

The GOG-version of the game comes with a Tool that you can use to configure the resolution etc, which might be the solution. But the Steam version doesn't come with this.

Anybody have a solution for this?

Same issue here.

I'm pretty sure this release is an officialized and simplifed version of GOG.com's tool. If you launch the game from your library instead of the desktop/steam taskbar shortcut it gives you an option to launch a configuration tool, but the only thing it allows you to do is change the resolution.

When I launch the game it either flashes a black screen and crashes immediately, or it starts loading and crashes upon hitting around 15%. When it crashes while loading it ALWAYS crashes at the exact same point.

i remember having to do some tweaking with the gog.com version as well, mostly to use dgvoodoo2.

following the installation part of this guide:

https://helixmod.blogspot.com/2018/05/star-wars-episode-i-racer.html

also some easy tweaks for the graphics:

more info, skip intro etc:

I just tried this, other than the obnoxious bright orange dgVoodoo watermark (despite having disabled it in the options) there have been no changes at all. Still crashes immediately upon launch.

I tried that option in Steam too, same thing happened. Crashed without error.
Wow I Got It To Start The First Time, Realized I Didnt Have My Controller Plugged In So When I Got To The Menu I Exited Out, Plugged My Controller Up Went Back Into The Game And It Crashs Every Time!

Was having the same issue, but did manage to get it working. Followed the helixmod tips here: (thanks!)

But did NOT install the revised EXE, but followed other directions. I'm not sure exactly what happened next, but running it for the first time from windows as suggested (ie. not Steam) I got the ingame black screen with blue progess bar... which basically froze my system. No choice but to hard reset. Things weren't seeming promising.

After reboot, I had almost given up. One last attempt before refunding. Ran from Steam... and now it works fine. It IS running through dgvoodoo as the logo is shown.

Menus and HUD are low rez, but actual pod/track are full screen rez. Racing is fun and responsive. Running xbox1 controller, 144hz 1920x1080, rtx 2070.

Happy racing. Hope others get it working too!

Thanks for the responses, svfn and BBBrox, will check those solutions out. I played the game a lot back in my childhood. Was hoping for a fun nostalgia trip today with this and Outlaws being released on Steam. Have been having issues with both games. Will hopefully get Racer working at least.

Will let you know if it works.

yea you don't really need the other extra patches. what i did for my gog install, is just dgVoodoo, configure dgVoodoo like in Helix's screenshots, set SWEP1RCR.EXE to run as admin + Win XP Service Pack 3 Compat. Mode.

you can use -v launch option for SWEP1RCR.EXE to show the Video Settings Tool, but i just left it as default resolution. because you can change the resolution from dgvoodooCpl.

i think maybe you copied the wrong files. if done correctly, the watermark does not appear if you uncheck it. also set SWEP1RCR.EXE to run as admin + Win XP Service Pack 3 Compat. Mode.

Download the latest dgVoodoo 2 release (at least 2.55.1 version): http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html

- unzip, then from inside its "MS" folder, copy "D3D8.dll", "D3DImm.dll" and "DDraw.dll", along with dgVoodoo.conf and dgVoodooCpl.exe, all into the same folder as SWEP1RCR.exe.

see the screenshots here of dgVoodoo's settings: https://helixmod.blogspot.com/2018/05/star-wars-episode-i-racer.html

I've tried everything in this thread thus far, and now instead of crashing the initial blue bar will load to about 15% and then freezes. My mouse is still movable but with a spinning blue circle, and in order to exit the program I have to ctrl+alt+del to open task manager that way and then force close the program in order to exit.

Sounds similar to my experience, but task manager would not let me close it (or do anything else). No choice but hard reset, and then the game worked fine after that.

I am having the same issue as 123, and I have tried all of the fixes. Is there anything I should try instead?
