Yeah the game usually goes to shit towards the end.
For its time, merely at that time, it was least amazing because of expectations due to the studio behind the product. Admittedly, there's flaws but there's nothing that detaches the game from being intriguing with its storytelling.
Beyond the flaws, there's a story with depth but nothing that would probably impress those unfamiliar with brooding crime stories such as Goodfellas, Heat, or Scarface. Although it's not a masterpiece it however introduces newcomers into a franchise that ultimately remained ahead of its time, at the wrong time, with the right ideas but wrongfully developed with its resources. The sequel however was a vast improvement despite it falling short on its time length and ending.
Years later, these games could've been vastly improved with modern technology and I still believe a third installment would be genuine. But if they rebooted the franchise, with or without the original actors, I would openly accept if it were to give a proper opening and closure to its original ideas.
Others may dislike this series but to me it's a misunderstood and misguided gem.
