Frequent Flier: A Long Distance Love Story is a short yuri (girl x girl) romance visual novel by NewWestGames, the same developers of Ecchi Sketch: Draw Cute Girls Every Day! and Sweet Volley High. Frequent Flier tells the story of Emi, an American girl that's spending her vacation in Scotland. She soon meets a Scottish girl called Isobel, and they both fall in love and start making plans for their future. Everything seems fine at first, but them Isobel starts acting very weird...

The game was based on a true story, according to the developers. It starts cute, but Emi and Isobel's relationship gets unhealthy after a while. As soon as Isobel tells her "first visible lie" to Emi, I knew there was something wrong, and that this story probably wouldn't have a happy ending. Anyway, the writing here felt basic to me; it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't that good either. It was readable. I grew curious to know which lies would Isobel tell next, and how Emi would react to them.

The art style is very basic together with the coloring, but that didn't bother me so much. Some CGs were pretty (like Emi in the bathtub), but most of them (especially the erotic ones) weren't so good. BGM was alright, somewhat likable. About the voice acting, like it says on the description page, is only partial: just Isobel and James (Emi's best friend) are voiced. The VA was acceptable in my opinion. Also, it took me 2 hours to reach all endings, including the "hidden one".

4.5/10. I recommend getting this visual novel on a generous sale or a bundle and if you don't care about amateur art. It can be a good choice if you're in the mood to read something quick. There's also a free R18 patch which adds additional scenes to the game. You can find it on the developer's website.

This one felt oddly painful to go through, for lack of better words. The art looks very basic, or perhaps rather base-ic? The bodies are well proportioned, but there seem to be some continuity issues when it comes to hairstyles at times, especially when comparing the sprites to CG art, where I can't help but wonder if they understand their own characters. And why does the MC have such dead-looking eyes? Maybe it was for emphasis on her troubled mind but I couldn't help thinking of her as zombie. Also I know everyone has different art aesthetics, but in the one scene featuring nudity, I have to wonder whether it was an artist choice or whether someone didn't know what nipples are supposed to look like. It really kinda took away from everything the scene was meant to be, as it drew the attention away to this... incorrectness. Perhaps they look as such to avoid something or other, but if you need to tastefully censor them there's probably better ways, and if that wasn't the reason then I don't even know.

There is voice acting for the two characters your protagonista interacts with. While Isobel's voice is nice I don't feel it was a good match for accent and personality. (Or maybe Crush Crush's Nina has spoiled me. That is one hell of a sassy Irish ginger-haired maid I tell ya. I could listen to her voice lines forever and the writing always gets a chuckle outta me.)

I understand the story is partial auto-biographical so I don't want to speak too ill of it, but it just wasn't for me. Maybe it was the way it was written, but some parts felt flat while others felt dramatic for the sake of being dramatic. If it takes you a while to get through a VN on reading alone that is usually seen as a positive thing since it means you get more bang for your buck, but that extra time needs to be worth it. If reading becomes a chore it misses the point entirely. And I generally have a hard time dropping stuff because I always hope for a turn-around, but damn.

There's also a super secret ending that the devs have been quite vague about in the Discussions, but at this point I couldn't be bothered anymore to be honest. This VN isn't entirely atrocious by any means but it could really do with some polish. When the art is lacking, the writing needs to make up for it, or vice versa. If neither really pulls you in, it ends up a disappointment. I suppose there's always the hope for a reboot or a version 2.0.

Both visuals and writing are horrible: repetetive and boring. There's no meaningful choices, the drama seems made out of cardboard.

Frequent Flier: A Long Distance Love Story is a short (about 2-3 hours) yuri visual novel. It's a story about kinda complicated relationship. It's never too easy but what was going on in this game made me rather curious. I have a number of yuri games in my steam library but...not my cup of tea at all. As this game is quite short I thought I could give it a try. And soon enough I realized I don't mind. Love is love no matter the gender, the story was interesting to keep me going.

At the beginning we see that the game is based on a true story and it was very intriguing. There's sexual content here but luckily for me no explicit art or detailed text description, so even I was ok with only general stuff. At first it was nice to read about MC, her feelings to that pretty girl, then things escalated quite unexpectedly... I was surprised, worried, annoyed but still intrigued. You know I finished the game minutes ago but I'm kinda frustrated. What was really going on? I expected the true ending route to show the other girl perspective or reveal the truth about everything but what was that? Is it open-ended? Should I think for myself? Is it obvious enough and it's me who is not getting anything? Why was she even lying all the time? Aahhhh frustrated!

I guess trust IS a key thing in any relationship. There're three possible outcomes. So there's actually one meaningful choice at the end of the story. Plus there's that weird annoying hidden ending which you get downloading the game before that first choice and have to skip fast enough choosing 'Yes'. In games like this I'm always a bit taken aback—What's the point? How am I supposed to figure this out without a guide or any hint form the dev? Just ridiculous. At least that ending was really worthy of my two attempts.

In general, it was not that bad really. Art is simple but kinda cute. English is rather good, I didn't notice any typos except constant wrong spelling of 'no-one' and wrong usage of dash. There're achievements which is always a nice thing as it adds the number of 'perfect games' on steam. I personally appreciate it a lot. The game is partially voiced. One of the girls is Scottish in the story, I don't know if her voice actor is as well but I really enjoyed her accent. The best feature about this game for me personally. So, it's mostly a neutral review. You may give it a try during a sale when it gets a discount.

I have to say, I really liked this game much more than I thought I would. I typically don't play visual novels but a friend recommended this one to me and I gave it a shot.

The game has great writing (super funny at parts!) and I felt that it told a very real story - Love is full of ups and downs and the creator really makes you feel the weight of this, particularly near the end. The excitement and lust of a new relationship, the longing when they're away, the paranoia, the fights, the make-ups, the everything. This game felt deep and bittersweet, and from what I've seen, it's pretty rare in this genre.

Though have I little in common with the Emi (main character), I felt myself relating to her far more than I originally imagined. The supporting staff is also great - Really appreciated the voice actress who did Isobel and James reminds me of someone I actually hang out with!

Even if VNs are not your thing, I highly recommend you pick this up. I was skeptical going in but I really liked it!

I'm a bit surprised by the negativity in the other reviews, especially when it goes to writing - I think this game presents a very fine and believable story, even if it has some issues endemic to NWG titles (like unnecessary, mundane descriptions and scenes that clog much of the first 20-30 minutes of the VN). It's also particularly simple when it goes to the visual side of things and the voice acting feels a tiny bit off (especially for James, mostly because of the recording quality), but never to the point of being actually off-putting and considering what kind of plot it tries to communicate, I didn't mind it being a bit clunky.

It's also not a surprising story really - after the first "dramatic coincident" on the part of Isobel and early complications from her lies you can get a feeling on what kind of person she is and in what ways the story could end. It is, however, quite an emotional one and I truly felt for the protagonist and the emotional abuse she went through throughout the whole plot. There are only a few choices, but they show up in the crucial part of the story and are very strongly connected to its main theme, so I didn't really mind the relative linearity of it all. It's also a fairly short game (my playtime is bloated through a few hours of being AFK), so after you get through the slow start it doesn't ever get tedious or boring.

In general, while it definitely doesn't offer much visual flair, it's a pretty interesting VN and considering how cheap it is nowadays, I recommend giving it a try (at least of toxic relationship drama is something you like to read). I'll also mention that I didn't install the h-patch, but from what I read here, you don't lose much by skipping it and I'm not even sure if I'd ever want explicit scenes in this kind of story - what is most important here, is that it, in my opinion, works fine as "just" drama and is worth buying even without the smutty parts.

Heavily front loaded with character building that slows down the pacing as players are provided multiple major character traits before seeing much pay off or build up for them.

Well, I've unlocked 3 out of 4 achievements for this title. As of yet, I have yet to find a good ending. This is the first visual novel that I actually feel depressed after going through it. Whether or not I even want to bother trying to unlock that last achieve, you know? It says that it's based on a true story. I'm beginning to wonder if that true story ended in a suicide. It's really that much of a downer. I'm going to try again, after I've recovered a bit and fixed my mood. I will unlock that last achievement. I'm really hoping that it's a good ending. If not, I'll just do like the protagonist in this story and try to put the bad experience behind me and move on. I only blew like $5 on it, after all.

Update: Actually surprised I did not do this before I posted my review. Checking the text for the achievement Hard Landing, I see that by completely trusting Isobel (the girl you fall for in Scotland), you reach the true end. Well, the true end sucks only slightly more than the other ending(s) in the game. Not a fun trip at all. I'm sorry someone went through this bad relationship, but why did I have to go through it, too?
