You can wear artifacts that remove blocks/wards at the start of battle or bring a minion that does it. Fine example is Dampir with her ultimate skills that hit multiple times and remove resistance/armor as well. I assume it's you first playthrough so Dampir might not be unlocked but then there is skeleton with it's Smite that hit 2x + extra hits for each buff.
Hail of Teeth spell from Destruction tree is good for removing blocks as well.
The elemental respawn is due to it's 2 turn buff that will respawn it with full vigor. Just look at the buffs and don't kill it if it's buffed. Debuff or just wait and then kill.
1) You need to be able to break stances and disrupt enemy positioning very reliably.
2) If you deal Stress damage, you need a very reliable way to deal with enemies that are immune to it. Either have an adaptable team or have a secondary team or key benched Minions that you swap in on demand that can deal non-Stress damage. The higher the game difficulty the more you will have to do this, so get used to it. Spells can also help here.
3) If you deal mostly physical damage, be prepared to deal with enemies with massive armour that will take 0 physical damage. Again have backup Minions that deal Magical or Stress damage to swap in or use spells to carry you through.
4) If you deal mostly magical damage, be prepared to deal with enemies with massive resistance that will take 0 magical damage. Again have backup Minions that deal Physical or Stress damage to swap in or use spells to carry you through.
5) Beware of Wardens. They have very high resistance and armour and cannot be debuffed, so almost none of the strats you had in mind for points 1 to 4 will work. They can also redirect attacks to themselves preventing you from killing the enemies they are protecting. Spells are your best friends against these chumps.
I never said kill it last, just don't worry about it's buff if it is last. And for me it typically *is* last because it constantly buffs and I attack other enemies. Shrug.
