ALL HAIL IRATUS THE DARK LORD OF THE DEAD!!
Right now Iratus doesn't really have much in the way of story. If they were to flesh out the story in a sequel, I would assume that the natural direction would be to build on the idea of Iratus being a harsh but necessary part of the world, and accepting his place as a cleansing avatar of death, rather than a murderous tyrant. On the other hand, that would also undermine the whole "villain protagonist" angle of the game, so maybe he just wants to be an evil dictator in the end and all character complexity ends there.
One way to solve this ... he wants to be a tyrant for whatever reasons, he learned necromancy but he became so good that Death (the necessary part of world cleansing) accepted him as his avatar because he conquered death.
So here you have a villain protagonist that became the embodiment of death by coquering death and becoming one with the power of death. It is all his own self accomplishment.
A bit like how Skeletor became the embodiment of death in the He-Man cartoon (the one where Mordak turned the brother of the king into Skeletor). It was later revealed that he became an embodiment of death because of all the things he did as skeletor (if I recall properly).
Instead of being a chosen one or a God (which diminish the accomplishments of Iratus), he EARNED his way in his avatar status. He started as a nobody, a normal person to become this powerhouse of necromancy and death. Now that is appealing.
This makes Iratus a sigma or alpha male that started from the bottom to make it to the top against all odds.
Oops wrong setting.
