Is this anything like 'Battlehawks 1942' ?
How I loved that game.

First on the ST, then the Amiga.

Dive-bombing with the Vals, amazing gaming.

I also remembered it had a strategy management part where you became Fleet Commander and moved around the Pacific.

Is this the modern B A T T L E H A W K S™ 1942 ?

Many Thx

I am not familiar with the Battlehawks game. From the two things you mentioned about it, in this game you do become overall fleet commander of whichever side you choose, controlling the entire Pacific theater. Also it does have Vals and you can control them in combat to an extent, telling them which target to attack, but the dive itself you can't control, but you could release the bombs before they do it on their own. You control "flights" of planes , usually 3 planes in each flight. If one gets shot down, then you control two in that flight, and so on. Not at all a flight sim, no joystick type control.

I loved "Battlehawks 1942" and all following LucasFilm games created by Laurence Holland. :)

It was the first WW2 Action-Simulator (released 1988), followed by "Their Finest Hour" (released 1989) and "Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe" released in 1991.

These games were the predecessors of all subsequent X-Wing / TIE-Fighter games.

VASP doesn't have much in common with "Battlehawks 1942". One was an arcade simulation (and a real one-of-a-kind for me, as the predecessor of all X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter games and has a status for me like "Pong" ... yes I know I'm old).

VASP is the RTS with the largest known map to me ... maybe there are even bigger ones ... but not with the WW2 theme (that's why VASP is very high in my gaming experience ranking).

But ...
VASP is very related to another LucasFilm / LucasArts / LucasGames product... One of the last real ones.
I noticed this 3 weeks ago after installing a "remake" MOD for "Empire At War - FoC", which catapults the game from the year 2006 into the year 2020. Realistic graphics/proportions (planetary surfaces, insane light and explosion effects and also breathtaking ship models) and the battles of the small (interceptors and bombers) and large (capital) ships are also very comparable to VASP ... just in a galaxy far away ... . "EAW", however, has an additional mode in the "amphibious assault" and switches to an additional mini game to conquer the planets on the ground with ground troops.

VASP is more of a Strategic RTS in which unfortunately (maybe "only") there is a lack of historically correct battles that could be introduced through scripts when you reach these areas with your ships.
