You will get better results if you were rocking 4K and wanted to get a boost in performance, I generally do not use up scaling on my 3840X1600 monitor.
I think you can find the answer in this thread.
Indeed your gpu is limited and I understand the need for more fps…
upscalers perform better the higher the target resolution, so upsacling to 4K is always going to give better results then upscaling to 1080. The reason for this is there is more information to determine what to do with the pixels that are not there. So if you are going to 1080P then you might be starting at 540P, this is generally considered to be a bad experience and there really isn't much that can be done about it. Even if starting from 720P and going to 1080 it still just will not be ideal no matter what version of DLSS is being used.
This really makes using it a bit useless or at least limits the use case as if you are rocking a lower powered GPU and want to get better frames at 1080 then you will probably be better off just turning down graphics settings. That too will give you better frame rates with lower fidelity. If you are rocking a really powerful GPU then why bother with the upscaler unless you are trying to do something like 120 or higher FPS at 4K (which some GPUs could probably pull off without DLSS or FSR.
DLSS has come a long way since they launched it, especially on lower resolutions like 1440p, but if you're on a 1080p monitor I don't advice you to use it
