Setting your FOV to "realistic" distance is a load of bull.
When I first purchased ACC, I had come from the likes of Project Cars 2, where I had my FOV at 90 and "the sense of speed man bro!!". So at first I did the same with ACC and had it set of 90 degrees. And I recall how great it felt.

But then, since ACC was a "serious" sim for "serious" official racers, I started digesting the propaganda about setting a realistic FOV to hit those apexes just right. Gradually I found my settings going lower, from 70, to 60, to eventually 45-55 degrees or thereabouts, and have been driving with that setting for several years.

I even found myself making that adjustment in RF2, AMS2, etc.. setting my FOV way too low.

No more! And today I decided, you know what, let me go back to driving for FUN and forget this "realistic FOV" BS. So I set my FOV to 80 degrees (OH MY HOW DARE YOU!!!), turned on motion blur, and took a few laps around Brand's Hatch and Monza. Immediately took seconds off my laps times, but not only that, it FELT FREAKING AWESOME and FUN, as the pavement and static objects whipped by at speed!

For the record, I drive on a single 27 inch screen, so triple monitor users will feel differently of course and require a lower FOV. But for me, this is the ticket. A larger FOV allows me to know intuitively when to brake, using the sense of speed, it also provides sense of peripheral vision, which you cannot get with a FOV setting too low.

IMHO do NOT use the FOV calculator. It is utterly BS. It takes approx two working brain cells, that the FOV is not depended on how far your eyes are from the screen. That or those person(s) who came up with the FOV calculator and those promoting such BS should be dipped in tar and rolled in feathers. - Set your FOV, distance, height etc so it fits you personally and what you prefer. Play around with it and see what works at this given moment and stay with that. If you later want to change or try different, do so, the mind will quickly adjust. Most important is you have fun driving and from fun comes more driving and from more driving comes more experience and from more experience comes better lap times. How hard can it be ?!? lol

Yes and yes to the last 2 replies. FOV becomes absurd when the screen is too small.

Example what is the FOV if your 30 inches away from a 10 inch screen? the FOV is LOL at that point. So narrow you cannot even see the entire lane. Thats an iPad screen and 30 inches would be perfectly normal viewing range.

Our eyes see nearly 180 degrees, and we don't look through a small 32" window. Our eye give us a big fat viewing angle of things moving past us at speed.

Secondly, our 2 eyes allow us to judge distance in a 3D world. We know where the corner is, not by the size of the corner, but the triangulation that our brain calculates, using our sense of distance to the corner.

Another way to ex[plain this and easy to see; If I held a pencil up in in front of you and slowly moved it closer, you would know when it was about to touch your nose, and how far away it is. It doesn't matter if the pencil is 5 inches long or 1 inch. Your brain knows distance to the pencil by calculating the data from your eyes. This works exactly the same in real life. FOV is a useless tool.

IMO FOV calculators should only be used if you have a ultrawide/triples
On a single screen even on my 32 inch monitor the FOV is so narrow its straight up goofy
and terrible to play
So just set what your comfortable with and go from there

I agree. For people with a single monitor, specially if the monitor is not ultrawide or not near enough to your face, it is good to use the ideal calculated FOV as starting point but then increase it until the 'tunnel vision' stops being uncomfortable.

I play with a single 27inch 2560x1440 monitor at a distance of 75cm (29.5inch). My ideal calculated FOV is 43.5° horizontal or 25.3° vertical.

I configure all my games to actually use 51.5° horizontal or 30.3° vertical. That's equivalent to placing my screen at 62cm (24.4inch).

If I had triples or a huge ultras wide that I can place as near as I want to my face, I would use the ideal calculated FOV but unfortunately my room is too small for that kind of setup
