It would not be vs AI but, as you guys dont mind competition against AI I see no reason why to mind the compatition against other players, if the fun would be to sum the score of each of you and your friends only in disregard of everyone else at the race.
Just rememberthese oher drivers, not beng AI,are:
1 - not perfect as the AI and will do mistakes.
2 - not driving for you and your friends (not being that passive to avoid all contact.
3 - not going to hold back from a chance to overtake either.
4 - there wil be faster drivers (even on gamepad).
Its no fun when you over take and get dive bombed and T-Boned in the next corner cause people cant play Fair. its annoying af, its this way in every single Racing Game.
I consider that and when I overtake I:
1 - go into the turn watching more the virtual mirror than the apex
2 - if I notice car behind me is overshooting the turn (or if I dont trust car behind me) I either do different line or I overshooot the turn myself (tho I know how to remain inside the track "and" stay in front with better exit for most of the turns)
When I overtake I have to take into consideration not only that car behind me can be overaggressive or "unfair" but can also do a mistake trying to follow me or trying to get the position back.
AI wont ever be good practice for that at ACC (from my experience) much less the fact each driver on the track drives differently and you can not plan your move for one and have it planned for everyone else, each driver you try to overtake or defend aagainst is a different driver.
I also know and understand a slower driver that tries to follow or get the position back may do the mistake of braking too deep, not with intention of causing a collision but maay cause anyway out of lack of understanding, knowledge and skill (sometimes that driver brakes at a proper braking point but lack skill, trailbraking, to do so and end up sliding without grip and rearending whoever is in front, reason why I also brake deeper or do slightly different line to avoid the hit).
If you get online and get Tboned too much it also mean you need to improve on these understandings (either you should brake deeper or should account for unskilled/bad/unfair drivers)
Try automobilista 2, it's about to review a huge update, has multiplayer lobbies with up to about 30 AI drivers and you can do championships as well.
I have my fingers crossed for AMS2 as it's currently the best option to race with friends and AI in terms of ease of use, setting up the server etc.
In 2023 almost everybody has good internet, just play with real people !
