Well getting your track ratings is a good place to start.

Do some single player races or practice sessions on each track try to get 3 stars each and avoid hitting other cars so your SA goes up at the same time if you ruin your SA it could take a very long time to earn it back and its required for many races.

I think if your decent and can just keep up with the pack with out going off track or crashing at all a 10 min race on each track should give you 3 stars each the stars are required to enter some races...I think its 3-4 clean laps each track in a row.

Try to focus on learning the car and track not winning the races to begin and well for most of us winning races is a pipe dream haha.

Make sure your tire psi are getting to 26.5 after a few laps 26.5-27.0 is the sweet spot for dry lets say you do 3 laps and your at 26.0 hot tire psi then you would return to the garage and add .5-.7 in other words 5-7 clicks up on the tire psi....
then you save that setup as the tempature during that session so you can reference it to like idk 25c
then lets say its 20c in the next session you can then load the 25c setup and raise the tire psi by .5 1 click per degree or so to have your tires pretty close to correct you may still need to fine tune also brake ducts effect this as well.

but yea the tire thing is probably one of the more important things to know lol

look for these videos

And drive, just drive.
If you unsure about car or track (or both), drive solo at practice, not race against AI, then you check yourself against AI or players, but just drive.
Slow-in/Fast-out, try to enter the turn with a speed where you can exit the turn faster (it is true less for chicanes where sometimes it is better to reduce more on first and maybe even second turn to exit the last turn of the chicane faster) and you will do fine over time.
Yes you want to be faster through turns but not if you end up exiting the turn slower (or not stable enough what mean you take longer to regain speed).

Go get all three track medals for each track first. This will help you get used to them all, and will make more servers available for you to choose from. Racing against AI *can* help, but AI don't use the correct braking points, don't take different lines, and generally do unpredictable things that human players don't. But to get familiar with race starts, pit stops, etc. the AI are a great option.

I don't know,

as soon as you feel like you can lap consistently try the track online, just jump into the fire and be smart on track. Let people pass if you know they're faster. Most people who race online are fans of racing so they understand racing lines, general rules like blue flags etc.. so as long as you know that too I'd just say dive right in. Nobody is gate keeping in lobbies that have no Safety Rating.

Also, definitely learn what trail braking is you will increase your lap times by at least a second and develop better car control overall.

Enjoy m8

Learn to drive first. Then use AI to drive without conflict. Then try driving with real people.

what others said.
Also, d not use racing line though, you won't learn anything. Pick a car you like and try to master it first. Choose a track, do couple of laps, then check youtube for wr replays and tips. Try to be as much consistent as possible - find break markers for each corner and brake at the same spots each lap.

Thanks for the tips all of you, I got some watching and hopefully some driving to do this weekend it seems :)

Yes, dont use the "ingame" racing line (what also mean dont follow the AI as it also uses the same line) neither its braking indicators, it have many errors.

I also recommend Coach Dave Delta. The setups are good and the software is extremely useful to help with ones driving. You get LMU, ACC and iRacing setups. Its like 18 bucks Aussie a month for me. You can compare your lap to a pro and look at racing lines, braking points and speed differences.

Get fun of the game (driving). With time you will be better and better (setups and tracks best lines knowledge). This gives you satisfaction (results and clean driving).

- try to master pitstops
- trying different setups is a good thing (for your knowledge)
- don't be afraid of overdrive the car (you should feel a sweat spot at some point to be fast)
- drive clean (especially from start to T1/T2 in any sim racing game) if you go online

BTW Don't call yourself 'casual idiot' please;)
