Question regarding paid vs. stock car setups
I'll precede this with saying that I'm a semi-casual player, who mainly has played offline and just recently started to get more into Online races and hot laps.

I noticed that my qualification times usually land me in the middle (depending on server and players present sometimes higher), so I figured I'd practice a bit more and look at setups and track guides.

I ended up purchasing some setups for the 296, which on average did improve my times by 1-2 seconds quickly, however, the problem is - they're just not fun to drive. I'm willing to take the L and go back to stock setups, but would like to know from someone with experience, what times are possible with the plain stock setups from ACC? For example, would it be possible to get to around 2:17 at Spa with a stock setup?

I understand that the purchased setups work and just require practice, but I do not play regularly enough to invest the time to see if they'll become more fun to me subjectively, I just want to understand how close the stock setups can perform to pro setups.

Thank you for any replies in advance

Stock setups can deliver from 1% to 2% of the best possible times (not from the times you usually find online) and I myself, who is not an alien, can reach times like mid 1:48 at Monza, low 1:23 at Brands, low 1:34 at Misano, mid 1:31 at Valencia on default safe, I only use the latest DLC cars because of FFB, but that is about it.

Yes, aliens can get into 2:16s at Spa with default setups, I am a bit bad at Spa and get only from mid 2:19s to low 2:20s with default safe, but it is competitive given your skill, understanding and seat time.

the 296 is sort of known as not being very fun to drive and sort of just glued to the track also most people have been saying on the 296 setup is not as important as some cars because its already almost to good....

by not fun do you mean its to easy to drive or that its to hard to drive? also where did you buy your setups

if you look on youtube there are a lot of free setups i like using fri3d0lfs setups on youtube there is setup links to download in the description of every video also.

also Jardier on youtube just started a website and posts free setups https://jaroslavhonzik.com/setups/assetto_corsa_competizione/ you should check out some of his races/live streams on youtube as well.

217 on spa is a fast time i dont think i can run that and i have 1600 hours in the game although i avoid spa from racing there a lot when i first started also monza and getting murdered every race basically lol. the track just never clicked with me.

im sure people can use the aggressive setup and run 2 17 on spa though but i would still say your better off learning how to adjust the setup your self most common things to start with is
tire psi 26-27 is the range
brake bias usually adjusting it to the rear a little more can help with trail braking and not locking the front tires
wing and ride height depending on whats happening lowering and raising the rear will have a pretty big effect lowering the rear will cause the car to be more stable but also can cause under steer if your running lower wing you probably need the rear to be a little lower.
if you raise the rear you will get much better turn in possibly over rotation if you go to high and you will run a little higher wing the cars rake also effects the way the wing works so by raising the rear your making the wing catch more air and give more down force.

anways i guess those are kind of the first few things i would really check out Fri3d0lf for setups also you can watch his lap he puts out with the video as kind of a guide.

also Jardiers youtube and website setups...im sure there are many more out there as well

i would try a different car honestly if the Ferrari is to tame for you or not fun to drive on ACC the thing that will make you improve the most is just playing the game and having fun so you continue to race and practice setups can help but personally there are a lot of good free setups out there and also tools that can help you make your own.

either way most setups will need some fine tuning to fit your driving that could mean more tc/abs 1 more click of wing 1 less click of ride height steer ratio is also very personal.

its one of those things a track that long means you really have to be on point for a long time so if your 1 second off in brands hatch your probably 2 seconds off at spa because the track is almost twice as long lol

it also takes that much more time to put in the same amount of laps and learn the track and every corner for me spa just does not ever make me feel good to drive on idk why same with monza even still when i go race those tracks people just lose there minds for some reason and do all sorts of crazy moves and crash people off track non stop that has really sort of made me avoid those 2 tracks.

Some presets of older cars haven´t been reworked for 1.9.x, so your comment has to be taken with a pinch of salt for older cars. I mostly drive the Audi and oh boy with some of the defaults I feel like driving on a pogo stick, whereas the new Lambo feels a lot nicer on the defaults. I havent't tried the older Lambo, but anyway who does these days ?

I have been able to, even with poor FFB, return to close to my previous best times with the 488 EVO using default safe the same (same setups saved with tyres pressure adjustments) on the first week after the launch of the latest DLC (and borking of FFB), only did not return or improve due to lack of consistency due to lack of FFB feeling on that car, where the nee Ferrari have proper workable FFB.

The defaults still deliver, if anything, 0.5% slower, but "maybe" that is about it (and mostly due to lack of FFB in my case, sum of best sectors would make me be very near my previous best times).
I dont drive the lambos

I actually like driving the Ferrari, the setups (GoSetups) just resulted in me initially losing a lot of control. The "less fun" part is a bit hard to describe.

Since I'm rather casual I don't really want to get into doing my own setups etc., and regarding YouTube, it's mostly not for me anymore (save some random track guides).

Either way, thank you for taking the time to respond at this length, it's appreciated.
From my experience if you improved 1-2 seconds with a paid setup it means you didn't practice enough with the agressive setup, and that improvement is due to practice and not the paid setup.
With that said, paid setups tend to make the car more nervous so you will have to tune them to suit your driving style. In the end you will have to tweek them so, why don't give a try to the agressive before spending the money?
My benchmark is Jardier's pace. If I'm around 2 seconds slower it's ok. So in the end doing 18,5s at Spa (tweeking the agressive setup) lap after lap is not a tragedy
