It's great you work on your gamepad skill.
I don't use it and no aids at all but I am hardly competitive. Still I am rather new and it's not a wheel, it needs years to build good skill.
What about physics change after 1.8? I think it's much more gamepad friendly now. Do you like it more?
i think i have like 30-40 hours on monza alone and i only have hit a 48.9 once or twice sense the 1.8 update on a thrustmaster tmx wheel was doing 48.5 pre 1.8. its also one of my worst tracks and i am def not fast or a great driver but i dont see tons of people doing 46s or 47s sense the 1.8 update expect to spend 100s of hours on monza to get to that pace.
i think ive only done about an hour of driving on monza sense 1.8 i usually avoid it because it just feels like 90% chance of being wrecked.
i think you just dont realize how much time people have put in to get those really good lap times not just in there practice but in there car setups and understanding how the game physics work studying there replays to make sure there lines are perfect.
really 49s is not bad on a controller in my opinion and it took me a long time myself to get out of the 49s like 700 hours of ACC lol and really sense 1.8 update im more in the 49s unless track conditions are perfect and low fuel.
i would just say keep on practicing it takes time honestly i would race other tracks besides monza sometimes you can just get burnt out on a track or stuck in a bad groove that isnt helping you improve.
