As for what exact resolution to run, it's up to the experimentation as it works a bit different for each screen. You could start with something like 2592x1080.
edit: Screens also often have option how to treat different aspect ratio resolutions, streaching being usually the default. Your screen manual should have info on how change this behaviour. So you could use the other resolutions you mentioned, thou it will still be blurred like the first option, and with additional black borders. So not the best.
Yep that's what I meant, that way you keep your aspect ratio so the image doesn't appear stretched. It wont be as sharp as native res but will have less graphics load.
