Changing Gamepad Shift Buttons Fix
I don't know if anyone else is having this issue or if it was just myself but hopefully this will help:

I am using an XBox One Elite controller and wanted to change the Shift-Up button to "B" and the Shift-Down button to "A" but it would not save the Shift-Up.

This is what I found and what I needed to change for it to work:

In the game go to controls and make the Shift-Up and Shift-Down the buttons you want it to be then exit the game.

In "\Documents\Assetto Corsa Competizione\Config" folder the is a file "controls.json" open it up in a text editor like notepad (I use Notepad ++) in there you will find a section that looks like this:

"gamepadSettings": { "useSteerWithRight": false, "rumbleIntensity": 0.80000001192092896, "steerSpeed": 0.69999998807907104, "steerGamma": 3, "steerFilter": 0.80000001192092896, "deadZone": 0, "speedSensitivity": 0.20000000298023224, "useAutoSteer": true, "uICommandButtonList": [], "raceCommandButtonList": [ { "actionType": "GearUp", "key": { "key": "Gamepad_FaceButton_Right", "bShift": false, "bCtrl": false, "bAlt": false, "bCmd": false } }, { "actionType": "GearUp", "key": { "key": "None", "bShift": false, "bCtrl": false, "bAlt": false, "bCmd": false } }, { "actionType": "GearDown", "key": { "key": "Gamepad_FaceButton_Bottom", "bShift": false, "bCtrl": false, "bAlt": false, "bCmd": false } } ] },

As you can see for some reason it has "GearUp" in there twice, I deleted the middle section to look like this:

"gamepadSettings": { "useSteerWithRight": false, "rumbleIntensity": 0.80000001192092896, "steerSpeed": 0.69999998807907104, "steerGamma": 3, "steerFilter": 0.80000001192092896, "deadZone": 0, "speedSensitivity": 0.20000000298023224, "useAutoSteer": true, "uICommandButtonList": [], "raceCommandButtonList": [ { "actionType": "GearUp", "key": { "key": "Gamepad_FaceButton_Right", "bShift": false, "bCtrl": false, "bAlt": false, "bCmd": false } }, { "actionType": "GearDown", "key": { "key": "Gamepad_FaceButton_Bottom", "bShift": false, "bCtrl": false, "bAlt": false, "bCmd": false } } ] },

and everything is working perfect.

Again, don't know if others were having this issue but I was with clean install.

Maaann your a lagend. I also wanted to change buttons for up and downshifting. I did that left the menu and wasn´t able to shift at all. No matter what i did it was not possible to safe the buttons i had mapped for shifting.
Did search in the game files forever... didnt know that the gamepad settings are safed in documents not in the steamapps folder so i did never find them.
Due to that i havent been playing the game for a month or so because i just cant drive with autoshift.

T.H.A.N.K Y.O.U !

Yeah my problem is that in the settings there’s no option for changing the button for shifting so I literally can’t play lol

HINT: In general if anyone have problems with ACC options go and change the config files.

I appreciate you sharing your experience with others even if I am not a one who need it.

I haven't tried it, but it should be quite easy to do with the Steam controller settings. (?)
