It's closest to D5 in terms of mechanics and gameplay, and it's also a direct sequel to Disgaea 1 if that matters to you.
Biggest difference between it and the rest of the series is that there's no Magichange (you Mount the monster instead, piggy back style), and when using towers, everyone gets the full amount of exp and mana (helps to level up faster when needed).
