If it's a story/DLC character, they have no "main" class, so you will have to subclass them or those points go to waste. Once you subclass, that subclass gets all of the class mastery exp. So you can't make a mage, subclass warrior and get both, it would be a mage that's only gaining class exp for warrior.
protip get eveything to level 3 as it takes a really short amount of time then do the long grind after
