If you're tough, you could beat up the Prinnies for XP, or clear a few out, and throw one onto the now empty/cleared-out spot for a huge chain-reaction (this will probably kill the person throwing the Prinny). Just be careful, attacking the Guide directly (Mil, that cat who you can talk to, to advance to the next floor) provokes it, and, well, typically they're way too tough to beat as their level scales way above that of the item's residents.
(Although if you could use a skill that moves the Gatekeeper or Mil away from their initial position and quickly step on the portal now that it's clear, if you're caught in a bad situation.)
But if you don't like the Mystery Room, yeah, you can always leave via the cat.
In my desperation I finally pulled the left trigger button on my controller and to my amazement Killia would do a combat roll!!!. I could then finish the map.
Thanks for the replies Doods!
You can also talk to people while standing on their heads (or open chests this way, or open em mid-jump), if it helps.
I really need to figure out how to change that, haha.
That's so, so weird. I hopped into the game to test before writing that, and my A button does both.
ETA: I'd also switch to mouse and keyboard, but I can't tell how to open menus. This game's not especially intuitive...
