The only downside is that you get no mana for buffing (which is where the star spell comes in handy in the item world of a lower level).
If you play it right, a professor should never really have to attack, and her evilities make buffs much more potent so you definitely do not lose a character's worth of damage.
Just get her her tier 2 (double exp from casting buffs) and 3 evilities (a random unbuffed stat on each target will get 30% buff when casting buffs on them) and you will have a character that can give a massive amount of buffs.
Maybe I am not high level enough, but so far I only got SPD, HIT, ATK and INT buffs on her (the cleric has the two defensive ones, so maybe it is related), if you want the complete set you might want to either make scrolls from your cleric or reincarnate a cleric in a professor.
There are probably other ways to play that class, but massive buffs on my team is where mine shines.
Braveheart / Magic Boost / Target Lock (+30% stat or more) + sage's Multi Attacker (attack twice) + maid's Afternoon Tea (get 2nd action) is a huge combo. And that's before abusing evilities.
However, if you want to level up your professor, you can just have them lift up a strong character and kill things, or you can give them a second weapon and kill using the weapon's skills. You can pick any weapon, since you can always upgrade the weapon mastery rating in chara world. If you want to teach the professor spells, I recommend using the skill training squad once it's unlocked. Until then, a weapon should suffice.
use the shards and magic extract to all your support characters. when you have high enough stats revisits some netherworlds.. use all ur support characters to level up their skills. it will take a while but its worth it, to get stronger support characters
