Never played a JRPG, will I enjoy this?
Hi guys! So basically I've never really touched this genre except for maybe Pokemon if that counts. I like the look of this game however a lot of the themes and mechanics are very alien to me due to my inexperience with this kind of thing. To be blunt, I'm used to things like FPS's so the idea of fighting demons as a somewhat underdressed anime girl is just a little strange.

In short, do you think I could still enjoy this or am I jumping in at the deep end a bit too much?

Thanks a lot guys! :2018salienpsychic:

Disgaea is pretty deep end for weeaboo culture. Since you said that the only RPG experience you have is Pokemon, you could transition slowly by playing games more your genre with RPG elements, like Borderlands or Fallout (FPS/RPG) or something more of an Action RPG (Deus Ex, NieR:Automata). If you want to jump straight into something more traditional, I'd suggest something more straightforward like Golden Sun, Dragon Quest (anything 8 or later - the DS remakes of 4-6 are great as well!), or the Mario & Luigi games.

Okay that makes sense.

I don't know if this makes much of a difference but I love stuff like Borderlands. It's just the weaboo stuff in Disgaea I'm a bit worried about, my brain's gone into meltdown after seeing some talking penguins take on an army of demons in the trailer. But something's telling me to go for it, maybe that's my inner weeb.

Anyway, Thanks for the help!

This is way more of a Strategy RPG which can be harder to get into, I can't remember the story and the humour in this one but these games usually have pretty good jokes and good stories.

Someone said in another thread that the story in this game is weaker though so I don't know...
Its not game for everybody since its mostly punched down for the grind of lvls and item lvls
alto both gets easyer later on especialy for chars after you rebirth them few times hitting lvl 9999 on them will get easy items are bit harder.
The story is probably not the best pulling point of the game but its still good and funny as well.
The game play may be bit hard if you dont know anything about the game and its mechanics but it be can be great fun or good relax.
There are many good options to make party for nearly any situation anyway to make simple sumary.
Game has few mechanics that you might need to learn but tutorials cover most of them
there are few maps which are more anoyance (geo crystals/clones or enemy boosting)
sometimes you will need to grind few lvls as story levels jump pretty fast
but its good and fun the chars are cute and enjoyable and overall the experience is great.

As side note i dont like strategy RPGs never liked them never will but i love Disgaea xD
i donno why but the game just does something that other S-RPGs just fail at.

Actually, this is not JRPG. This is a tactical turn-based strategy with RPG elements. The fact that the game was made by a Japanese company does not make it JRPG.

I would recommend going for something more like Dragon Quest for your first jrpg, disgaea is very good, but it is also a lot harder to get into from what i've seen.

It has rpj elements and is made in japan, which makes it a jrpg due to how poorly defined that term is. Yes I know some put more or less limits on the term but it just means an rpj made in japan, and beyond that seems to sometimes include games made outside of Japan in the style of an existing jrpg.
