Okay thanks, but does the character have to be mastered first then? If it isn't will it not be able to if you sub it?
You can change subclasses of anyone at anytime you please.
One main reason you'll want to subclass your main characters/DLC characters, is simply to unlock classes that can only be unlocked by having subclasses a certain rank, or higher. And since your main Hero's, and ESPECIALLY the DLC characters are over powered, it's a quick and easy way to unlock all the classes.
Most notable class you'll want, is a Dark Knight (in my opinion).
What exactly is so special about the Dark Knight? I unlocked him already but tbh my Female Samurai is putting in a lot more work than he is.
It is possible I'm using him wrong somehow though. Any tips?
nothing. all generic units can be made to be literally the same besides their first unique evility slots (which cant be removed) and their generic skills, since you get more evilitie slots, can transfer all generic unit evilities (even inate) and teach every skill to everyone besides unit exclusives (land decimator for example) and get all aptitues to 300% on any unit. only really during the story and early post game is where one unit might be inherently better then someone else because of aforementioned evilites, but once you put some work in any unit can be used for pretty much everything.
(sorry for the long sentences lol)
biggest exception are obviously unique units with non-transferable inate evilities (learnable unique evilities can however be transfered via character world!)
Dark Knight's ability causes him to deal damage to EVERYONE in a bunched up group of enemies. Lady Samurai's ability is more damage against a single target.
Bosses are usually the Lady Samurai's turf, as she learns some GREAT abilities to boost her damage even further as well as her second unique skill.
Dark Knight truly shines against waves of trash mobs, as he has a good AOE skill and a good lifesteal skill to hold his own. His stats are also very well rounded, making for a better frontliner than the Samurai, that has to rush in and murder whoever she's attacking. Throw in Heavy Stance and Veteran Hero, back the two up with an Armor Knight armed with a lance and a Sage, and nothing short of Proto Darkdeath will stop you.
As someone else has mentioned Dark Knight does AoE damage, to everyone around them, provided the enemy you're attacking is one panel away from you.
So if enemies are bundled up near you, or at least one enemy within one panel of you, it doesn't matter whether you counter, or attack, all other enemies near the one closest to you get damaged. If your Dark Knight is strong enough, it pretty much one shots 10 units, in one attack.
While yes, they are a generic class, and not a Main Character, that special Evility alone is worth more than majority of the Evilities out there. Easily seen (By me) as the best class in the entire game.
not to mention if you equip them with a spear/lance, becomes almost unbeatable.
I ran through the entire game with a single Dark Knight alone. Didn't have to pull out anyone else, it became so nutty, that I didn't care about my main characters. My Dark Knight cleared everything, in 1-3 turns. Because well... The AI in this game isn't that smart. Grouping around a Dark Knight is a terrible idea. Just for future reference.
pretty much every character can do that. the speedrun just uses kilia because its faster then spending so much unneccesary time to make the DK. if you really wanted to, you can just put any random weapon on a healer and clear the story and like 99% of the post game with that if you're dedicated enough.
in fact, sages AoE or izunas mapwide aoe overload just allow you to clear everything aoe related in the game before your enemies even have time to move, group up or even attack you.
Although does he work better as a solo character? Since I'm using a full team of 10 characters. (I know it might not be ideal, since I spent way too much money equipping them, but I love them too much to abandon them)
Dark Knight is really good but not any more overpowered than other classes. Maid with a hit build and throwing knives is devastating for instance. There are other ways to break characters and their abilities, I suggest experimenting.
