What are mains? We just don't know
Not really a problem, but anyone else can't decide on a main party? I tend to just have 10 people I use on every map instead on levelling several parties, but there are so many that I want to use that sometimes I can't decide lmao. I'm on chapter 2 grinding ranks to obtain quests that unlock units but I have no clue on how to make up my party.

It doesn't help that I like to use main characters a lot lmao. I had it easy on Disgaea 1, since I hated the ones from Earth, didn't like Maderas or Hoggmeiser and all that, but here? I have 4 story units and I feel bad not using all of them haha. Christo isn't even that useful (or at least I should stick to just him or just the generic healer), but he's so pretty I can't abandon him. And I feel like I'm missing stuff if I leave many unique characters behind.

This is for the story, tbh, if I plan to beat post-game stuff I'll have to use only truly useful units. But aaah. I love all of my little dolls. Anyone else feeling bad for abandoning cute (or cool) units?

(In fact I don't want to abandon my "male" healer, now that I gave her a girl name and a gender bender evility so that the game treats her as female, lmao. How could I leave MY DAUGHTER now)

I've yet to reach post-game, so I don't know how much can be done with classes yet. I started out with a bunch of unique characters, but I'm gravitating into more generic classes lately.

Original party:
Laharl-chan, Seraphina, Rozalin, Artina, Priere, Christo, Killia, Sapphire, Almaz, Adell

Laharl somehow ended with the thrower role. Sera and Rozy as long range guns with a nice dual combo on Rozy, Sapphire as a tanky (robust!) melee with an axe, Artina as healer, Priere and Christo as main killers. I taught Christo some extra offensive spells which he cast behind Priere who slaughtered mobs with her big physical AoEs. Their dual combo skill is also amazing single target damage. Almaz and Adell were backup throwers who didn't see much action and got replaced pretty soon.

Current party:
Logan, Priere, Christo, Laharl-chan, Rozalin, Izuna, cleric, gunner, professor, succubus

Logan has taken the main thrower spot. Priere and Christo remain as main dps with Priere's position as main growing fast. Laharl-chan and Rozalin remain on the team as backup throwers and support dps. Their overloads give them nice clearing ability, same as Priere's. Izuna has joined in a similar role.

I've taken a liking to the cleric girl. I gave her a sword and am growing her into a wannabe magic knight with a mix of physical and magical attacks and heals. The gunner joined as a combo starter. He's been useful against enemies who significantly outlevel us or have high SPD. Professor is there for buffs. She's who allowed me to start farming Training 1 at a pretty low level, which led to some ridiculously quick growth (item ranks 14->30, levels 50 -> 180). Succubus is a recent addition. I loved her in the old games and wanna give her a try. I'm considering teaching her some spells to make her our condition afflictor. Comboing with the gunner's accuracy boost, she might be able to let us eliminate very strong enemies with poison or paralysis.

I've almost unlocked the sage. She might also take up a slot.

I got a party that works for me, might be pretty weird though.

Dark Knight as tank/nuker. Heavy Stance and Veteran Hero plus some extracts/shards and CW trips turned him into a freaking monster. He has to walk to get to places and can't be thrown, but that's not an issue shoes and a thief can't fix most of the time.

Lady Samurai as the single target murderer, enough said. Duelist works wonders when comboing with her second unique skill. Veteran Hero for flavor and durability.

Ninja with Sasuke as speedy dodgetank. Enough said, pretty plain as far as units go.

Armor Knight using a lance, Advance Guard, Elemental Rise and Vaccine. Most of the time she just takes things to the face without ever taking damage.

Thief, because Thieves just got a lot comfier to use without being dependant on Hands to steal.
And their boxes.

Sage, promoted from a Mage, with some healing spells. If it's at range, she'll murder it. Magic Bias, Wisdom Incarnate, Star Blessing and Expand. She doesn't need anything more.

Professor, promoted from a Cleric. Support character incarnate, with some offensive capabilities when really needed. Chemical Reaction is great on her.

Nekomata with Bones Out and Desperation. She hits HARD and doesn't even have to worry about her defense because the Armor Knight is there to take her hits.

Archer, because everyone needs more support with combos. And i like her voice.

Kitsune, because i like foxes. And because she's a AOE unit with nice multipliers and item world utility.
OR
Succubus, because they are best. And because she's a AOE unit with nice multipliers and Charm abuse.

First dispatch group:
All six main characters, fighter from Giant squad, armor knight

Second dispatch group:
Witch, Healer, Professor (for buffs and magic damage, mostly buffs as magic is currently bad)

Third dispatch group:
Logan+2 more Wrestlers (for throwing things and people around)

I enjoy using main characters, so most of them are prepared to handle things. Still on chapter 12, only reincarnated Killia three times and Red Magnus once. Need to add thief into the main team, but his initial affinities are too bad to comfortably use him.

Witch, clergy (I prefer the ailment healing with normal heal over more potent heal, personal preference thing, plus his evility to use RES as his attack stat with staves is OP), sage, dark knight, armor knight, ninja are my "main" team.

Thief, archer, magic knight, wrestlers, sorcerer, kitsune, succubus and flora as conditionnals.

A few high HP prinnies just there in case I need a suicide bomb squad for some reason.

To be fair, most if not all generic classes have good things going for them even with just their base evility.
Too bad that monsters can't take part in tower fun, a very resilient character on both end and moving around via tower move is pretty fun to do every now and then, and the damage output is high enough to make it somewhat worth it even early on.

Guilty pleasure for me is using desco because of how much I enjoyed having her do everything in D4, but uniques can definitely be left to the side if you want to, which was not really the case early on in the other games of the series (aptitudes of base generic classes were so poor that they needed significantly stronger gear to reach the uniques, but with the stat boosts you can get early on in this one it's not a problem anymore).
Prinny Oct 29, 2018 @ 3:40pm
I suggest using only the ones you like the most.

What I use is a 4-combo magichange with 4 buffer and one attacker.
Killia, Sage, Gunner, Rosaline, Pleinair, Bear, Twin Dragon, Felynn and Desco.
Then I got my utility group. Dark Knight, Sage, Thief, Metallia. they serve basic purpose like Geo, Steal, kidnap, lift etc. Strong enough to take on a few enemies or a few hit.
And my fodder/bait group. Prinny (the hp one) Succubus, Seraphina, Izuna. Dark knight, Armor Knight. They can take a beating and stall enemies. or bait them so they get close enough for me to unleash my main group on them. etc.

Pretty much all I need to have fun.

And even though the Archer is still the worst class and the bow is still the worst weapon... I made one again. I Love the Archer from the bottom of my heart. though it pains me to admit she will never be usefull, even at maximum stats, I am making her as strong as possible.
Seriously... G, F, for all bow skills. Super bad aptitude. Please excuse me, I'm going to cry in my corner now.

(At least you can somewhat abuse Chara world in this game to make all aptitude super high.)
Fel Oct 29, 2018 @ 3:51pm
Don't dismiss the archer, when she is in range of a long combo she adds her own attack after each character's attack, it can quickly raise the "combo" meter to very potent levels, letting the last characters in the chain (and herself) dish major damage.

Granted, this is only good when you need the damage boost from the combo meter and everything happens in her reach, but even if you keep her just for the combo (not raising her bow or stats to make use of the evility) and use the rest of the team for the damage, she can trivialize quite a lot of maps, especially if your team isn't power levelled.

only pram.
why hassle with more chars? and much easier postgame if you dont have to equip a whole party.
finished all carnage maps with her solo so far, just 4 carnage bosses left and baal atm.
2 sages should be fun too and even better then solo pram, but im too lazy to level them atm.

Now that I discovered subclasses (yes I'm very new) I feel less bad about not using some units but now I don't want to reincarnate my old lady fighter and brawler into lady samurai and ninja. Because I would LOSE them. Oh my God. Postgame is gonna kill me.

I know too much about disgaea to actually use more than one character with equipment hundreds of character levels higher than I should have as soon as the item world opens up.

Sooo....Red Magnus until I unlocked succubus and nekomata, then I started using them to magichange into their special unique axe even though it was pointless to do so until postgame XD

Postgame you will be able to level a character to 9999 and reincarnate them so quickly that being worried about levelling the right characters through the story will be quite laughable.

Who you decide to level during the story matters not the slightest bit when you skip hundreds of levels in seconds.

That's a relief lmao. I'll just play however I can and then find guides to see what's more efficient then (?)

I used mainly Killia for dd, Magnus for support damage, sometimes Seraphina for ranged and C-Sto for healing, but post-game I switched to mainly Sage and Killia. Though, it's just mainly Sage now. I'm sure I'll add magic knight, killia and either red magnus/void to elite four later on.

For main story I did it like this:
Killia with swords
Zeroken with fists
Lady Fighter => Heavy Knight with spears
Red Magnus with axes
Seraphina with bows and healing magic
Maid => Gunner => Pirate with guns
Christo with staves and omni mage
Usalia with physical monster weapons
Izuna with magical monster weapons

That way, there's 0 overlap on weapons and it's nicely balanced. I did a bunch of research on subclasses/evilities to figure out neat tricks like Imp on Red Magnus to stack hp and give Reverse Poison.
