5 has better gameplay,
but I would say that the first game has a good story as well, but the gameplay isn't as good.
The game does a very good job of explaining the basics.
There is a free demo that you can get hold of
https://na.alienwarearena.com/ucf/show/1929539/boards/contest-and-giveaways-global/Giveaway/disgaea-5-complete-exclusive-demo-key-giveaway
saves from the demo will transfer to the full game.
If you want to play the demo, then install on another drive, otherwise, the full game will delete the demo content.
That's why it's DD2 (Dimension 2) not D2.
You don't need to play the rest of the games, but it also would not hurt to try them out.
The rest of the games (in this case) also includes some of the side-branches of the franchise because, for instance, Prier is from La Pucelle Tactics which isn't an official disgaea title. It's what I like about the whole NIS-franchise. The cameo's from other games in that multiverse alwasy made me smile though sometimes their inclusion breaks the game on a whole new level.
For someone to find out that there's a new JRPG that has an available demo they need to go out of their way and search both reddit and steam forums because Google gives them back results from May. Then they have to know the game's title.
Are they really trying to make the game's release more known?
You don't have to play each previous game, but if you like the story and characters from 5, or any other, chances are you will enjoy the story and characters of each game. My favorite are the characters from Disgaea 1, and would highly recomend playing the main portion of that one just for the amazing characters.
Game looks interesting. I will use the English voices no matter how terrible as I dont understand japanese and dont want to read a game that has voice overs lol. But that is just me.
That's fine, dood! It just a good thing to know, for anyone that cares. I hope you enjoy the game!
