New to Disgaea , Do i need to play the older Disgaea games first?

I've never played any Disgaea games before and this one got my attention , but do I need to play the older games first to understand D5 story? Or every games have different story like Final Fantasy series?

No. All stories are separate, except 1 and D2(not to be confused with disgaea 2)

5 has better gameplay,

but I would say that the first game has a good story as well, but the gameplay isn't as good.


The game does a very good job of explaining the basics.

There is a free demo that you can get hold of

This game is worth buying it's literally hundreds of hours worth of content. The story is unique to this game but it also includes every character from every other Disgaia to play with. If you love old school strategy RPGs and grinding for levels, stats and equipment plus if you like Anime then this game is for you. The story is not very deep and kinda cliche but the characters are fun to watch. The main character is kinda boring but I love the rest. Give it a try, for 30$ you can't go wrong. Also use the Japanese voices since the english ones are terrible.

I agree. The english voices are awful. It's like they're reading the script from a paper. Nothing like the passion from earlier titles!

That's why it's DD2 (Dimension 2) not D2.

Playing each game can help you understand various references being made, and some gameplay mechanics are so barely changed from older games that understanding them in the older games means you understand them here.

You don't need to play the rest of the games, but it also would not hurt to try them out.

The rest of the games (in this case) also includes some of the side-branches of the franchise because, for instance, Prier is from La Pucelle Tactics which isn't an official disgaea title. It's what I like about the whole NIS-franchise. The cameo's from other games in that multiverse alwasy made me smile though sometimes their inclusion breaks the game on a whole new level.

Can I say that the demo is so well hidden that I'm not sure if they're really trying to promote the game?

For someone to find out that there's a new JRPG that has an available demo they need to go out of their way and search both reddit and steam forums because Google gives them back results from May. Then they have to know the game's title.

Are they really trying to make the game's release more known?

Each game can be played for hundreds of hours, but the main story/plot can be completed in the same amount of time a normal RPG usualy takes to complete.

You don't have to play each previous game, but if you like the story and characters from 5, or any other, chances are you will enjoy the story and characters of each game. My favorite are the characters from Disgaea 1, and would highly recomend playing the main portion of that one just for the amazing characters.

Game looks interesting. I will use the English voices no matter how terrible as I dont understand japanese and dont want to read a game that has voice overs lol. But that is just me.

why the demo is so long @@! I'm already at chapter 3 and it's not over yet , Should I finish demo first to get save transfer to main game? I wanna play main game when it release right away =(
