FOR THOSE ON THE FENCE: Here's the truth about Disgae 5
First, I won't be buying this game on Steam -- but **ONLY** because I've already bought it twice: on my PS4 and then on my Nintendo Switch.

Here are 5 things you should know. The answers to these questions should determine if you should or should not buy this game.

#1: Do you like SRPGS (Strategy RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics)

#2: Do you understand that you are buying an RPG, yes, but not the open-world 'run around and get into random battles" type?

#3: Do you enjoy a game that has so much gameplay there's virtually no chance you will ever truly complete it?

#4: Do you mind a game that puts story second to gameplay?

#5: Are you offput by quirky Japanese characters?

Here's what you should know:

* This is the greatest SRPG ever created. It blows everything it competes with out of the water. There is simply no competition here. No second-place. No third-place, even. This is the DEFINITIVE modern Strategy JRPG

*If you like these types of games, it's almost impossible not to like this one

*The Item World will have you at it for hours and hours and hours

*This is a game that is better bought on the Switch (IF YOU HAVE IT) because it really is great portable. If not, PC will be fine.

To be honest? Part of me wants to buy it a third time too. I don't even know why. I mean what more could I get out of the PC version? Better graphics? This isn't a game that really matters about that as much.

I'm thinking of just playing it again on the Swich. There's just something about the Item World that makes the entire game worth playing.

The moment I unlock the Item World, (in the entire series, not just this game), I've got like 2 lvl 10 characters lol.

Then when I finally resume the story, I'm like level 150 across 20 lmao.

I just don't look back. It's that good.

I don't know why but I had a different experience. I played the first one on PS2 for like 80 hours way back when and a bit of 3 and D2 on PS3. I downloaded the demo of this game on Switch and I didn't like it at all. The main character was over the top and annoying, your typical main character super hero that can beat an army while eating Ramen. The main female character was cool but kind of annoying spoiled princess type too. The gameplay was cool but it's the same as every other Disgaea and the game is a full priced 60$ on Switch.

So is it really that good? or was the demo just bad? because I just got an overall "meh" impression, but I really like that they included the Japanese interface though and it's true that Disgaea is endless but after a while it's just repetition you know? like I don't see myself getting to lv 999 just to go back down to 0 and do it all over again.

I'm having trouble deciding between this game and Mario vs Rabbids, that's shorter but also cheaper and has multiplayer or Skyrim on Switch that I really want but it's criminal paying 60$ for this game a third time lol

Thanks for the review

Well, for me, I played the game so much and I can barely even tell you what the story is, because I just skip it all. For me, it's all about the gameplay.

You don't even really have to USE the "main character" if you don't really want to. Once you get just a LITTLE BIT into the game, you can start creating your OWN characters (many, many, many classes to choose from). You can have like up to 50? I think?

RIght now, I've got 20 characters I use and my main character and the other characters they force on you go almost unused. My ninja is my favorite atm.

In others it's over 100. I can't imagine they'd lower it here...

@Paro

- don't forget the amazing story and awesome designed main character roster

- don't forget the deep game mechanics (impossible to explain them here too awesome, too deep)

- don't forget the amazing special attacks, no other game offers this overwhelming special attacks that are presented in the most astonishing, sometimes hilarious, way you can imagine

- don't forget the innovative character classes and races. Elves and Dwaves, Mages and Warriors? Urgh! How about Yandere Maids, Lucha-Wrestlers or Swordwielding Rabbits? Yay!

Well if the price is okay and they fixed the translation maybe it is really worth a third buy?
See it as an investment for supporting future Disgaea games on PC

I might. Just because it would be interesting to play on a PC or a laptop. Like if you're on an airplane and you got the tray table down, it might be a scenario where it's worth a third buy.

the main characters get some development down the line as the story continues, and as you get a larger group i feel like the personalities all even each other out a bit more. however the over-the-top anime feel never goes away and it's a matter of opinion whether you'll end up liking them or not. personally i love the characters and the story because i'm a sucker for stupid characterization and silly dialogue, but it's possible the story may just not be for you. (also i feel like killia was the weakest protag so far and feels like just a washed down version of the previous game's protag, so i can understand the dislike for him)

the gameplay won't change much either, but with so many different things to do and different ways to approach a battle i argue about it being too repetitive. though you're right, at its core its all about training for hours and hours on end doing essentially the same thing till you become strong enough to reach the next goal, only to repeat the process again.

it might be worth keeping an eye out for a sale, but it does sound like this series just isn't for you and that's okay

I don't entirely disagree with this. I'd rather just like to add to this that, in my OPINION, the story is not necessary to enjoy the game. Meaning, in other words, it's more like a "bonus" if you love it.

But for me, I never cared about the story and I consider this one of my favorite games of all time. I don't think anyone should let disliking the story get in the way of loving the game

greatest SRPG ever created is actually FFT, though

Greatest -- for its TIME, I agree.

But right now, today, in 2018, if you compared FFT vs. Disgae 5? IDK man, that's a very hard argument to make!

there is no argument. disgaea 5 wins. Lol. FFT had a good run, but they didn't keep making more, and while the mechanics are fun... disgaea kept evolving and becoming better and better. i enjoy ffta2 more than disgaea 1, but disgaea 5? naaaw.

That used to be true, but you *HAVE* to factor in the value of Switch's portability.

You cannot imagine how valuable that is until you've tried it. Especially on a game like Disgae 5, which really doesn't need great console hardware to max out @ 60fps.

Imagine sitting at a doctor's office playing disgae 5? Or on the train?

This game lends itself VERY well to being played mobile.
Paro May 1, 2018 @ 6:40pm
I mean, obviously, as a *HOME* console, PC > PS4 100% or near 100% of the time.

But PC vs. Switch in a game like THIS? There's clearly an argument to be made that the Nintendo Switch version is the superior version for its ability to be played on the go.

I live and only stay at home. PC is the superior platform. Being able to choose your controller/peripherals/etc. I haven't left the house for over 1.5 years, even get groceries delivered... Where's your argument exactly?
