Until late-game, anyway. Then it's level 500 maxed-out Carnage Trapezohedrons for everyone! Can't knock the huge buff to stats 3 of them gives.
As for weapons, I typically favour Fists and Swords over all else. Thankfully since we can now change the appearance of items, that means I can turn my Yoshitsunas and stuff into Prinny Swords. xD
But during the main game, I only really care about the equips on my casters, in which case I focus on Orbs and Emblems to buff their SP and INT.
For weapons, I prefer Fists, Swords, and Staves.
For the main story of the first playthrough, getting Emblems is usually nice, especially if they're legendary or rare. They're somewhat useful for all classes, and I choose the character that gets it based on the specialists on the emblem, and of course prioritizing my preferred characters.
I've always liked Shoe type items, but they're less special now that you can pass bills in items to up their Movement if you really want to.
With all that in mind I like to stick to my habits of having a healer with a bow, a small prinny squad, about 3 varied other monsters, a warrior with a sword, a mage (I switch from male to female game to game) with staff, a thief with a gun, and then whatever I think most fits the main characters best.
As far as accessories it really just depends what statistics make the most sense for party role. Give everyone with moderately high use an imperial seal-type item so that they're well rounded and last more than a floor. In this item world you get them practically as much as pixie dusts or hands. Other than that the stats don't lie. The ideal for me is to hit a fine line between being so anal retentive about a few points in a stat that your playtime is over 1000 hours because you need it perfect, and being a normy who plays for 8 hours with a roster of 10 just the story buying from the shop as they go.
