shards and magic extracts
do the added stats stay with characters after they've reincarnated or does only or a portion of them stay or do they get removed entirely making them not really worth farming?

They stay with characters regardless of reincarnation

You can accumulate 10 million in all Stats from Shards/Extracts and it stops at exactly 10 million.
If you reincarnate to lvl 1 you will see you still have 10 million present after reincarnation before you ever gain a single level. So they are permanent.

Whether they are worth farming or not depends on how far you want to go in the game, if you are looking to max stats, and go for Post game End Boss content then yes, it is worth it. If you are trying to only beat the story and call it a day, then you don't need a single shard or extract to do this.

btw, if you decide you want to just crush the story to get to post game quicker, spend an hour or two farming extracts in the item world, and put them all on one character. Your primary character will never lack for stats again.

Umm, not really. This is a terrible time investment. That's 2 hours wasted on something that you'll be able to do a thousand times better and in a matter of seconds later in the game. There are much better things to do in preparation for post game. If you're looking for a short term boost, you're far better off just doing Martial Training or leveling up an item. I still don't recommend leveling up items so early, however you're at least accomplishing other things at the same time so it's not a complete waste. For long term, you should start setting up innocent farm with Statisticians, or duplicate existing innocents and items with high population. Extracts are super lategame thing, they are only worth farming if you've done everything else you could, even on lv 20 LoC enemies it takes a very long time, and you need an extremely powerful character to do that efficiently.

I'd agree that they aren't worth investing much time before the post-game. The fastest way to get to the post-game would be to power level a decent party member. It's very easy to over level for the story missions with little effort if you use some of the good leveling spots. You don't need much of a level gap to then steam roll the missions with a single unit.

I'd also point out that farming extracts slows down the rate at which you level up your squads since they both use captured enemies. There are a number of very powerful effects squads give and they should be your first goal. Not upgrading your squads will make your life much harder all round.

Those are great points as well. Power leveling a single character is the best way to go about it if you are looking for efficiency. You can always create some characters for support magic, passive buffs, magichange and throwing, and you have a well rounded team that can do everything from farming item world, to clearing LoC stages, those guys don't need to be trained or maintained, they just need some levels to unlock their skills. It's much easier to get one character to a desired power level and then have the rest of the characters you need to catch up, than it is to level up everybody in pararel.

I'm not saying to invest a ton of time in it. Only that an hour or two spent farming extracts (especially via metallias overload) gives you a useful stat bump that helps you speed through story maps. The extra stats give you a net positive in terms of time spent, especially if the character you power up has a wide aoe attack. (again, such as metallias overload)
I capture-farmed map 5-5 7 times (admittedly I was mostly messing around doing a quest that required me to complete a map 7 times) and just that got me an extract worth about 3-400+ in most stats. That's a heavy boost to your ability to clear story missions at top-speed, and only requires a minimal time investment. I doubt it took me more than half an hour.
Again metallia is probably a good primary character if you're going this route since she got I think 3 insta-win revenge casts from 7 fights

Once you get the 3x1 capture ability, you can farm 3-4 for prisoners early on for easy extracts. I sit there and capture a bunch to get the megaphone quest reward, but use the prisoners for leveling squads instead of extracts. Megaphone as a subweapon early on gives a butt-ton of prisoners over the course of the story.
