"side borders on widescreen monitors" option does nothing

i have it turned on in the setup file, but the picture is still stretched
any ideas?

i ended up rebooting under windows (i normally play on linux), set the screen the way i want.... go back to linux and play... I wonder why the setup screen is not available under linux but still affecting it

i always play in windows and choosing this setting has never had any effect on the game
