Intentional irony? (MAJOR spoilers)
The conversation with the director in the endgame is all about choice. Are we determined by our experiences, or do we choose? Earlier in the game, like most people, I assumed Azriel and Delta-Six were separate people, and when Delta-Six hears from Balder through the cell walls -- bragging about how he's going to complete his final exam -- it strongly telegraphed that I'd be making the same choice. But after the big reveal, of course, I realized I couldn't have chosen to complete my final exam even if I wanted to; the escape still had to happen. (Although, on reflection, I suppose Sayuri could have escaped with someone else's help.) Anyway I'm wondering, was this intentional irony on the developer's part?

Sorry, can you explain a little more why you can't pass the final exam? I kinda remember but it's been a few years.
Morally speaking, you probably won't want to complete it because you'd rather escape; the game seems to be suggesting you have to make the decision whether or not to obey the director. Logically speaking, you realize later that you couldn't have decided to finish your final exam, because you were responsible for freeing Sayuri (Epsilon-Five). Of course, after your subsequent re-wipe you must have gone through the final exam anyway, in order to become Azriel Odin.
