Confused about resource buildings in water with Blue Mars DLC
I'm doing my first serious playthrough, and have the Blue Mars DLC. Numerous buildings, such as resource extractors (except for ice), maintenance facilities, wind farms and a few others show a water drop icon with their build picture, and hovering over the water drop informs me the building can be build over land or over water. But when I have a resource extractor (chemical plant in this case) in water, it takes damage at an alarming rate and a nearby maintenance facility, fully staffed with drones (and not yet underwater) won't repair it even though it is within range.

So can I build resource extractors on a deposit covered with water nor not? Am I missing something here that enables repair of buildings in water? Or am I misunderstanding something about buildings and water with this DLC?

Hi!
If a land building gets underwater, it'll get damaged and then be destroyed.

First, you have to research the "Aquatic Structures" on the tech tree to be able to place the water buildings. Those water buildings will be exclusive to be placed on the water and won't take any damage from it.

Thanks. However, I researched "Aquatic Structures" several research cycles ago (e.g. have researched several techs after it also), and I never got that ability, apparently. Also, loading the game just now, I see that 'water drop' icon that highlights those structures which could be built on water is now completely missing.

So something seems buggy here, or otherwise not working as expected. Am I supposed to do something else to enable building aquatic structures? Is it supposed to offer me the option to do that when I build something? Why isn't it working with the requisite tech already researched?

Land buildings don't transform into water buildings. Dismantle the old and build the new.

I did that. I still get what appear to be land buildings which take rapid damage and are never repaired, eventually reducing to rubble. Do I need to build a port and a shipyard first on a body of water before building other aquatic structures? Are the workers replaced with ships to service those structures (pick up resources, or deliver in the case of maintenance facilities))?

Yeah, something like that. Land vehicles do have some swamp fording ability to help dismantle stuff, but you need ports and shipyards to explicitly use the water stuff.
