If you mean like that it is the best strategy (which it kinda was as it reliable gave good amounts). Not anymore. They introduced Tiered deposits of: Shallow (think like <1000 units), Deep(<5000) and Ultra-deep(20000). Dropping a lander only spawns a couple of shallow nodes around it. Enough to get started, but the game very much pushes you to use Areological Scanner's to scan and establish bases in regions with hotspots that have lots. As only via scanning can you find Deep veins with the hot-spots being the only place you often find the Juicy Ultra-deep veins that can keep your operations running throughout the game.
Theres generally enough to finish a map with lots left over.

Or you can use a workshop mod to add in endless mines as a tier 5 research item
Yeah, having endless mines, even if the actual gathering rate is very slow, would have been a complete game changer for me.
but still, in basegame, if you are lucky, you can get some endless vein
