Spoilers - Ending and Bestgirl Discussion

TL;DR:The ending maybe me hate Shirogane SO MUCH. Meiya is bestgirl.



I thoroughly enjoyed this game 10/10 but...I come away from this game feeling disgust at whiny crybaby Shirogane as well as a confusion and disbelief at why such a whiner got all those women to love him so much. Shirogane had some good moments of character progress and then he just undoes it all over and over again - and announces it every time. He's a loser and he knows it and I did not enjoy being him. It honestly wouldn't be so bad if not for the final fight scene REALLY enforcing his character flaws, as he gets babysat to the point it would be better if he weren't even there.


Without spoiling anything about CLANNAD, I just want to say that that game's protagonist had a MUCH more likeable personality, making it far easier to not get punched in my suspension of disbelief at the inevitable harem situation. Tomoya is the man! I also found every instance of a girl liking him to be understandable and believable (relative to this game).


I also came away from this game feeling incredibly bad for Meiya. Holy ♥♥♥♥ this is a "Friendzone Simulator" isn't it? It was actually pleasurable in a sadistic way to watch Shirogane make everyone suffer in jealousy...to a point. A point that was far surpassed until any and all sympathy for Shirogane was replaced with sympathy for the female characters. Oh my god, poor Meiya. Poor everyone. I kinda want to accept Sensei's Love Nucleus theory JUST so I can survive the suspension of disbelief.


That scene with him laughing with Sumika while Meiya listens and the camera slowly pans back...The heaviest scene for me in the entire game! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Shirogane! Meiya's sniffles as she tells him in a pained, crying voice that he can have his way with her if it will help his anxiety...feels like the single best voice lines I've heard from ANYTHING.


I love to find another VN with a character I'll like as much as Meiya - any suggestions? Don't get me wrong, Sumika is deserving of her maingirl role and every other female character is great, but DAMN is Meiya bestgirl. This VN was a helluva ride, despite piloting such a frequently disappointg protagonist.

Meiya = Best Girl BY FARRRRRRR. I always get choked up when she is trapped by the superior and confesses her love to Shirogane

As for Shirogane's character, yeah he isn't the most relatable. I found the way the writer kept us invested in his character genius though! There are many scenes where we can identify with Shirogane based on the plot elements even if we are nothing like him. Like during the "return" scene after "chomp" we can put ourselves in his place because we also wish to return to a more happy place such as Extra. That's just one of many examples the writer used throughout the story to sync our thoughts with Shirogane's.

Also wasnt Meiya's sister death the catalyst that she moved in with the MC in the first place?

Even with Yuuhi alive Meiya would have moved in since the catalyst was the promise Shirogane made to her at the park when they were little. Inheriting the company just moved her timeframe up forcing her to act earlier to avoid a political marriage.

The Kasumi and Shirogane that exist in Final Extra might not even be the same as the ones from the Alternative universe. There is a hint that Kasumi of Final Extra remembers, but that doesn't explain everything. No matter which theory about Final Extra I read there is some way to refute it or point out flaws with it so the ending seems to be an enigma.

I usually don't make this kinda of "it doesn't matter" remark. In fact I'm not saying "it doesn't matter" when I say Final Extra (nice name) is an alternate universe hand crafted by a temporarily godlike character; it absolutely positively doesn't have to make the slightest sense or be compatible with Muv Luv extra in the slightest because it isn't the same universe, it's an alternate universe, presumbaly where infinite possibilities exist so any number of reasons can be come up with out of thin air to justify the presence of each character.

The fact that Kasumi may have been transported there with her memories just goes to show how godlike you know who was last minute.

Didn't Kasumi inherited other world's Sumika's memories and such? Maybe Sumika is reincarnated(like living inside like another personality), maybe I am far-fetched..but still..

She was absorbing them by being near the brain and reading it. I don't think she magically inherited them all, though. She probably wouldn't have a reason to have as many of Sumika's memories in the "final ending".

Yuuko is the best character! Maybe not "best girl", but i totally trust and respect her. She's rather morally shady, but it's always for the greater good and she may be cold but she's definitely not heartless. Not to mention she gets all the best lines and always calls Takeru out for his BS. And as a Steins;Gate fan, there is the fact that she has the all important lab coat.

If you look at the story from outside Takeru's head Yuuko is the main protagonist.
