Do I need to play the spin off?

Hi I wanted to read muv luv for the longest time and I know the 3rd route is alternative, but Is see some spin offs, do I need to play them?

As you've said, they're spinoffs. They were not meant to be played before the main trilogy (Muv-Luv, which contains Extra and Unlimited, and Muv-Luv alternative).

Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse, Muv-Luv Unlimited The Day After, Photonmelodies, Photonflowers and all of those are meant to be played after the original trilogy, and you should even avoid looking at those for too long because the existence of some are already spoilers to the main trilogy

If you want to mend the heart after that crazy roller coaster ride that is the trilogy you should check out photon melodies and flowers. I enjoyed reading those and were really funny.
