Metal Detector Right-mouse Button does not always work

PC with Windows 11. Most of the time, the metal detector works fine. Occasionally (and frustratingly) the "chirp" will sound and the "Q" key is displayed to show that the Metal Detector should be used. But on these odd occasions, the right-mouse button does noting. I have restarted the PC, restarted the game, refreshed the video and tried a half-dozen different scenarios to get the metal detector to "activate" and start showing the red light(s). Nothing! I've had to inch forward to do multiple "digs" until I find the cache! Any ideas??
