Bit too much combat.
The strength of Atomfall is in it's slow methodical looting with just a sprinkle of adrenaline fueled combat. Instead there are roving packs of 8-10 guys always blocking the way who will spot you instantly and always respawn.

I've found myself in large scale combat I simply don't want to be in constantly. I think the game spawns too many enemies every time. Instead of triggering a fight and thinking well, time to come up with a plan I'm just sighing and trying to use my resources as effectively as possible using multiple quicksaves.

I'm looking forward to sneaking around and getting in tangles with all the insane mutated things and big robots later but I have simply had enough of gangs of 10 outlaws every 3 steps.

The strength of Atomfall is its atmosphere, the exploration and the resolution of the truly original quests, this can frustrate many players once you unlock past 10 investigations/quests but believe me it's worth it.

Pay more attention to those spawns. It's not randomly spawning in those groups; rather there's set locations where they spawn and a set location they head to. Once you figure that out it's pretty easy to avoid most fights simply by avoiding or skirting the areas where gangs can be found (a lot of which is simply logical if you look at the map; most groups will be heading either from their base to a location, or from a location to their base, and where possible they prefer to follow roads and paths. Of course, there's worse things waiting for you once you go off-road, but since you say you're looking forward to tangling with insane mutated things ...). There are areas where you get non-random spawns, but those are usually much smaller groups (unless it's their base) and easily avoided or dealt with (and I think they only repopulate when the area reloads, so once you do deal with them you're usually safe until you leave the area and come back).
Though even if you do need to go into one of those areas, the gangs will only attack if you get too close or wave a weapon at them, most of the time you can simply back off or hide and they'll ignore you and wander off. In a lot of cases they'll also back off if you point a gun at them. They're only really aggressive if you're trespassing, which the game will warn you about. Finally if all else fails running away is always an option; they won't usually chase you very far (and it's worth noting they'll set off traps just like you would, and if you can lead them into an enemy group or a swarm they'll fight each other).
You can adjust the number of enemies under playstyle, iirc.
So if you think there's too many enemies, go change that.
Maybe make them fewer but harder.

Interesting, I just picked the recommended difficulty. Seems odd the developers actively want you facing so many enemies at once.
