VAIL FAQ
ABOUT VAIL

What is VAIL VR?
VAIL VR is a virtual reality multiplayer competitive shooter set in the near future. Play against others in a variety of competitive game modes, in beautiful brutalist inspired maps, and with immersive guns and physics.

Throw magazines to teammates, bounce grenades around corners, climb ladders, vault over obstacles, ride ziplines, defy gravity on jump pads, and more. You can also trust that every match will be competitive and fair because everything in VAIL is designed for the highest degree of competitive integrity.

After a fast-paced match, challenge friends to mini-games in the social hub, flex gun and avatar skins, or 1v1 friends. More social experiences and custom homes, game modes and experiences are in development.

VAIL is developed by AEXLAB, a crowdfunded VR technology studio based in Miami, FL. The game is in full production with plans to bring the game to Quest 2 and other platforms.

Where can I get the game?
The game is available now in early access on Steam for $19.99

It is compatible with all PCVR headsets that can connect to SteamVR. If you can connect your Quest to a VR-ready PC either through Air Link or Oculus Link, you can play VAIL.

The game is not available for Quest standalone right now, but we have plans to bring the game to other platforms, including Quest 2, by the end of 2023.

How much does VAIL cost?
VAIL costs $19.99 USD and is only available on Steam for now.

When will VAIL be on Quest 2?
We are actively working on a Quest 2 port and plan to release it by the end of 2023.

Is VAIL coming to PSVR2 or Pico?
After the Quest 2 port, we plan to bring VAIL to other platforms, including Playstation VR 2 and Pico.

Will VAIL be cross platform?
Yes! No matter what version of VAIL you play, you’ll be able to play with anyone else that also owns VAIL, no matter what platform they use.

I got access to VAIL Alpha, do I get to keep the game?
If you were given access to VAIL Alpha, you get to keep the game. VAIL Alpha is the same as VAIL with the only difference being that you can’t purchase DLCs (skins). This is a limitation set by Steam that we cannot control. If you wish to get some skins, we encourage you to purchase the main version of the game.

I already bought the game, how else can I support the devs?
Honestly, just playing the game and giving us your feedback is the best form of support that you can give us. The best places for you to give us your feedback in our Discord server[discord.gg] and on our feature upvote page[vailvr.featureupvote.com].

You can also support us on Patreon[http//%5Bhttps] to get unique perks such as an exclusive Discord role or your name displayed in game in the armory.

Does VAIL have merch?
Yes! We have a collection of t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and even gun stocks available on our website[aexlab.com].

GAMEPLAY

What game modes does VAIL have?
Our main competitive game mode is Artifact, which is inspired by Search and Destroy. We also have Capture the Orb (our take on Capture the Flag), Team Deathmatch, Free For All, and 1v1’s.

We have plans to bring more game modes to VAIL, so make sure you let us know what game modes you want to see next on our feature upvote page[vailvr.featureupvote.com].

How do you play Artifact?
In Artifact, the Colonists have a single scanner that they must bring to one of two artifact sites and deploy. To deploy the artifact, a Colonist must hold the scanner palm up and then use your other hand to connect the dots. REYAB can disable the scan by grabbing the artifact and holding trigger.

Each match is first to 11, with side swaps after 10 rounds. A normal round lasts 2 minutes, but the match timer stops once the Artifact is deployed. Colonists win a round by killing all of the REYAB, or successfully completing a scan. REYAB win a round by disabling the scanner if it has been deployed, or killing all of the Colonists before the scanner is deployed.

Can I host custom or private games?
Yes, just select custom game from the menu. If you want it to be private, select that option and it will auto generate a 5 digit password. Keep in mind that the host can also change the map and game mode at any time, no need to start a new lobby.

Where are the servers located?
We have servers located all over the world including US East, US West, South America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia.

I don’t see anyone in lobbies
If you’re having a hard time finding people to play with, head over to our Discord server[discord.gg] to find other players.

You can also check out the community made VAIL Matchmaking Server[discord.gg] if you want to try skill based matchmaking.

Will VAIL sell skins and other cosmetics?
Yes! We have a few skin packs for sale on Steam as optional DLCs and in the future we plan to have a full store of cosmetics in game.

Keep in mind that if you have access to VAIL Alpha, you cannot purchase DLCs. This is a limitation of Steam that we cannot control.

A few select skins have been given out to the community for being active in the community, supporting us on Patreon, or participating in tournaments.

You should add this gun/mode/feature to the game
VAIL would not be what it is today without community feedback, and we strive to take into account all community feedback while developing VAIL.

If you have a specific feature requests, let us know on our feature upvote page[vailvr.featureupvote.com].

If you have more generalized feedback, let us know in our Discord[discord.gg].

We also make an attempt to read every single review and take that feedback into account.

My PC is below minimum specs, but I can play other VR games; can I play VAIL?
Most VR-ready PCs will be able to run VAIL with some tweaking. The reason our minimum and recommended specs are so high is that the game is still in active development and so the performance can vary significantly. We are always optimizing our game, so you may see the minimum specs lowered in the future, but VAIL is inherently a more demanding game.

How can I improve performance?
We are constantly optimizing the game to make it run better on lower end PCs, but VAIL is inherently a more demanding game.

That said, we made a VR performance guide which may help your game run better, even if you don’t meet minimum specs.

What’s FSR and how does it boost performance?
FSR, or AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution, is a supersampling technology that aims to improve your performance in games. It essentially runs the game at a lower resolution, then uses supersampling to upscale the resolution back up. This, in effect, boosts your frame rates.

We have FSR 2.1 implemented natively in VAIL. Just go to the settings menu to turn it on and boost your performance in game.

Is there any possible way to play VAIL on Quest without a PC?
Yes! You can actually play VAIL on a Quest through Plutosphere if you have a good internet connection.

What’s Plutosphere?
Plutosphere is a cloud computing platform for Quest that allows you to play any PCVR game on your Quest without a VR-ready PC. All you need is a decent internet connect.

CREATORS

How do you open VAIL in Observer mode (flatscreen)
To open VAIL in observer mode, right click on VAIL in your steam library, select GENERAL and in the launch options type “-nohmd -observer” (without the “”).

The next time you open the game it will run in observer mode which you can control with a gamepad or mouse and keyboard. To open the game in VR again, just remove the launch options that you added.

In observer mode you can join matches as a spectator. Hit “tab” to open the menu, and you can also press “h” to hide/show the UI.

If you want more information about how to use Observer mode and the different options it has for casters and creators, check out our tutorial: coming soon

What's LIV?
LIV is a helpful tool for streamers, content creators, or anyone looking to make their recordings of VAIL look amazing! We have a custom made LIV integration in VAIL or you can use LIV’s First Person Stabilizer. If you’ve ever wondered how we get our videos to not be as shaky as most VR gameplay videos, this is how. You can download LIV on Steam.

How do I use LIV with VAIL?
With VAIL running, open LIV and launch the Mixed Reality Capture tool. This will open an output window that you can capture with OBS or any other screen capture tool.

Our custom integration has three presets: first-person, third-person, and mixed. You can switch between these presets in headset, in VAIL’s settings.

In first-person mode, head movement is smoothed and head tilt is removed to provide a smooth viewing experience. When you aim down sights, the LIV integration will zoom in slightly to help your viewers better see what you’re aiming at. The third-person view outputs a third person view, while mixed switches from third person to first person when you aim down sights.

If you want smooth gameplay, but don’t like the zoom when aiming down sights, you can use the First Person Stabilizer instead of the Mixed Reality Capture tool. You can customize the First Person Stabilizer settings in the headset by pointing down at the green dot by your feet.

For more information, check out our short overview video (full tutorial coming soon).
