How do you join a game?

My friends and I are trying to play private matches with eachother. When we add eachother to the match, we never see an invite. Where does it go/ how do you actually join the match

This isn't obvious in-game, and is horrible design - But, the invite isn't actually sent, until you first invite them, and then click START GAME.

Intuitively, you'd think you first invite them, they receive and accept, show up in the lobby, and THEN you click to start.

NOPE. Invite, start game, invites sent, they accept, game ACTUALLY starts.

Really salts the first few hours of the game's online experience.
