I've never heard anything about the existence of a 2-player split screen version.
I've [played local co-op. Well, not co-op, since it's no a co-op game, but I've played head-to-head locally, using the "hot seat" style. Perhaps in the last couple of years they've added a split screen feature.
Wait, no, that does not make sense; each player would see the other player's cards.
In your initial post you said nothing about "shared screen". In your follow-up, you did. The "hot seat" method of play is essentially a "shared screen". You make your play, pass the ipad to the other player, who makes his play, and so on. Shared screen, but not split screen.
It's terribly clunky and annoying, with all sorts of annoying pop-ups - "It is green player's turn". [You click 'ok']. And then several other annoying things. Maybe it has improved. Doubtful but not impossible
