In the physical game, Events are turned face down after being played to make this clear. In this awful version of the game the rule is enforced without ever being indicated, so this question comes up a few times every year.
The original release of the game had the event cards blanked out in the game log and "cards played" sections. This helped avoid tag confusion, but caused additional problems because people who may have been looking away from the screen for a brief moment had no way of knowing which event card the opponent had played,.
To fix it, the event cards, after being played, were no longer "face down", which unfortunately had the side effect of causing tag confusion.
I think an ideal solution would be to show the event cards that were played but with the tags grayed out.
Anyway, the actual tag counters in the game are correct - one of the few things that has been reliably correct over the years.
EDIT - another easy solution would be to simply improve the game log (which already needs a lot of improvements anyway). The game log should say, "Helin corporation played event card 'ice asteroid' ", or something like that.
