1 small piece of advice I can give is play with Sub AI off. It sucks when somebody leaves without forfeiting, and it sucks hard then. But it doesn't potentially ruin your game if you DC for a couple seconds.
That won't really help. Game freezers still occur regardless of whether the AI sub is on.
I didn't imply it would help with the freezes, just with you leaving/disconnecting and the game continuing without you.
Sub On replaces any player that disconnects/leaves the game immediately with AI (also when he forfeits/times out) at least to my understanding in past games. Sub Off only replaces a player with AI as soon as he forfeits or times out. So the advantage is that if you have a disconnect or crash or something AI doesnt immediately take over and possibly ruin your game. The disadvantage is that if a player only leaves the game (but doesn't forfeit) you have to wait until his time runs out before he gets replaced with AI and you can continue playing.
This is correct.
AI sub is generally to be avoided, because if you need to leave for just a minute or two (for whatever reason; there are many), the AI sub will make (bad) moves while you are rejoining the game.
With either setting, an AI sub will take over a forfeited or timed out player - but, as Armanz noted, with AI sub off, it will not take over until his entire clock runs out or he actually clicks "forfeit."
It's a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ move for someone to intentionally and permanently "quit" without actually clicking forfeit. Some people, in a hopelessly lost game, might even do it to see if the opponent will forfeit himself first. Lame.
