mixed schools of magic
In the game of wizard 101 their is system for learning spells from different schools but still encourages the to stay in your school. The downsides to the system so far are:

1. Power pips don't seem to work with spells outside your school leaving you with only utility spells from the other school being viable.

2. Learning unnecessary spells (wasting training points) in order to learn the spells you want from other schools.

What I propose is certain mixed schools where it encourages you to mix at least certain magics together. If trained in these schools will allow you to use power pips for two schools of magic. You still have to use training points for learning the other spells of the school to freely learn the spells of the mixed schools. The mixed spells have theme combining traits of both schools of magic. The mixed spells also share the middle between strength and casting chance between the two schools.

For how you get these new mixed spells, Wysteria magic might just be rebranding of magic but some things can be used for explaining how mixed spells came about. Young magic trees have water run past them enfusing it with magic and then mixed in fountains. The fountains come alive and talk to the player.

1) That's what mastery amulets are for.

2) While this is true for beginning players, there are plenty of guides to show you what's worth getting, especially if you PvP.

Back in the old days, using some of these spells from other schools (for ex. a death using stormzilla+storm trapping etc.) were quite viable at the time and the game in my opinion was trying to have you experiment to see what works and what doesn't (although this quite punishing and quite scummy, cause once you lose your training points you can only get them by paying real money, unless it's one of those "Free Training point buy-back" events or whatever.

But, like I mentioned, mastery amulets have already solved this problem, although mainly only it for the utility of other schools, things have changed and some spells just aren't worth using anymore or are just terrible to begin with.

You get training points every 5 levels, by the time you get to max and do the zeke quests, you normally have all the spells you need to learn, and still have a few points left over
