Crowns to Win?

So I’ve just come back to the game after many years and have noticed how many people in the starting areas (wiz city/Kroktopia) that are way better. Do I need to spend crowns to keep up or should I just grind it out? I don’t want to spend crowns or anything. Just seems pointless to grind when I am so far behind already.

In simple word, "No" you don't need crowns to win, "however" crowns items in a sense do give you an edge over other players as you've probably seen, although depending on the item it may only be of temporary use or may not be useful for long as you gain a few levels, also keep in mind some of this crowns gear is quite Pay-to-win for example some of the wands can give "may cast" spells which most people around certain levels don't even have normally if you don't throw out cash.

So, if you ask me, i'd suggest you go the farming route, cause you did mention you didn't want to spend any money, and trust me as painful as it is to farm, you're gonna have to do it if you wanna make some sort of progression, especially if you plan on doing PvP, but in general yeah just farm for it.

I would say you don't have to really spend any money. There's a few things that may be necessary in the future when you're a higher level, but as of now, no. The only necessary thing to get would be a mount, but you can buy one with gold so that shouldn't be an issue. Grinding is the best way to get the best gear in the game, so just stick to that. Granted, it'll take a very long time to get the best stuff, but you won't need very good gear in the starting areas (Wiz City - Dragonspyre) because those worlds are super easy.

Though, past Dragonspyre you can look up the best gear to get after Celestia (Waterworks) which should be good until you get to level 100 then you switch it out. Gear from the crown shop isn't necessary, most of it is just for the looks and there's a few pieces that people tend to try to get (Jade gear for example) as well as a few wands (Soothsayer and Fortune Teller wands, which give may casts as stated above) Most stuff is given to you through leveling, so you should be fine.

While you don't "need" it to get palces in PvE so long as your compentaley geared, Ki loves to try to n udge you spend more money with all the stuff they slap into the cash shop

I personally wouldn't spend any Crowns on gear until you get max level. The leveling is so quick, you out level the Crowns gear quickly.

personally i played this game since it came out and i wish i saved a lot more than i spent on it over 11 years, because that was a lot of money... sure the membership was worth it, but like they said, all the crown stuff... no...

Personally, crowns are not necessary. If you want to play the game over a long period of time, crowns is the pay to go for buying areas. Other than that, crownshop gear is usually a joke and some mounts can be paid using gold. If you are just going to play it just to experience the story and gameplay, memberships are the way to go. The only time to actually buy crowns is during a sale. The $80 for 90k crowns (1250 crowns per $1) and the $60 for 60k crowns (1000 crowns per $1) are the best bets if actually buying crowns.
