So, if you ask me, i'd suggest you go the farming route, cause you did mention you didn't want to spend any money, and trust me as painful as it is to farm, you're gonna have to do it if you wanna make some sort of progression, especially if you plan on doing PvP, but in general yeah just farm for it.
Though, past Dragonspyre you can look up the best gear to get after Celestia (Waterworks) which should be good until you get to level 100 then you switch it out. Gear from the crown shop isn't necessary, most of it is just for the looks and there's a few pieces that people tend to try to get (Jade gear for example) as well as a few wands (Soothsayer and Fortune Teller wands, which give may casts as stated above) Most stuff is given to you through leveling, so you should be fine.
