The Den - Ring puzzle.

Can somebody please help with the ring puzzle in "The Den?" I made it this far without any problems, but this one doesn't make sense to me. I've done a lot of puzzle games in my time, but the logic behind this particular puzzle is eluding me. Thanks!

I have watched a few video walkthroughs of this puzzle being solved but it still doesn't make sense. I can see that the positions of the diamonds on the ring console to the right is the clue to setting the positions of the rings on the left console, but I can't work out how to interpret the clue. I suppose I have to count the number of spaces around the rings, but nothing I've tried seems to work.
