Formation breaking in combat

i've noticed that as i enter combat in a formation, when all my ships get close enough to attack they break formation and just fly right up to enemy even though i've told to formation to stand back a bit. weirdly it seems telling the formation to attack only tells the main ship to attack and the others just follow until they get close enough. what's even weirder is if i tell them to get back into formation they stop fighting the enemy until they're in formation, then they reengage the enemy and break formation again. is there any way i can stop the formation from breaking like this?

But in which menu? I cannot seem to find it.

Found it. For everyone interested, it's under Settings>>Gameplay>>Ship Commands

There are too many option to know where they all are and named :) Glad you found it.
