can ally ships follow at distance while ignoring relative angle?
i cant seem to make my ships simply follow at a set distance without my ship trying to rigidly set the angle they are hovering around another ship.

if i just click to make an ally follow another i get the non-angle relative movement i want between my ships, but i cant extend that distance without again binding the angle. ive tried searching through the settings but so far i just havent found any setting hinting at what i want.

its important to a somewhat unconventional strategy i want to use in my game, but that will be impossible if the ai on one of my ships is tweaking out trying to move somewhere it will kill its self, simply because my main ship rotated 10 degrees left

try pressing alt while dragging the angle, it might be what youre looking for, the ship will follow at the distance you set

Hold Alt, or enable Settings/Gameplay/Ship Commands/Prefer Grid-Relative Follow Angles.

The game has a lot of toggle that feel like they should be on by default, I shall find this one discovered today and turn it on. (had no idea what it meant before)

this isnt quite what i was hoping for but its close enough i guess. making it grid relative still locks the angle, which id prefer to be free, but beggars cant be choosers and this will work. thank you!

I do agree though, that it would be good if a ship turned to reach their formation destination instead of slowly backwards and side thrusting into position. Especially for support ships not designed with combat level thrusters.

That feature is not available, would be nice. was it there before? It was for enemies but it seems gone now, I just did a quick run and the single click on the enemy does seem to also lock an attack angle.
