Build part of a blueprint
I have designed a blueprint of a ship I intended to build in sections. So I would build what I was able to build, gather resources and then finish it off gradually over time.

At the moment, I can only build it if I have all of the materials at hand. So I'm not sure I understand the point in blueprint mode, so I assume I'm missing something obvious.

Any ideas?

1) breakdown the final ship into multiple stages, that are each functional on their own
2) have multiple ships, one being a cargo ship that holds your loot until you have enough

Thanks, I went with option 2. Option 1 isn't what I'd call a good option.

Hopefully the devs will consider adding this. I found it so useful in Sons of the Forest.

Seems so strange this isn't already something you can do.

Take the finished blueprint. Save it. Cut off pieces / modify until next tier down. Save that. Repeat until you have a tier you can build outright.

Or just hold ctrl and click build and it will finish what it can, although the result may not be pleasing.

that blueprint mode needs a "build this part" tool similar to the repair this tool in the other build mode.

You raise good points and that would definitely be a nice feature to add, but I'd like to answer "what's the point of blueprint mode".. for me its to move things around and make big changes. it lets me move parts and rooms into invalid spots, then fill the space around them so I can make big changes without having to get "not enough beds" "Not enough command points" every other click.

Would be kind of cool if you could save a blueprint as a section and not a whole ship. Like "Left Wing" "Tail" ect, and you just choose where on your ship to place this entire saved section.

You bring up an interesting point.

I'm still quite new to the game, so only found this limitation once I tried to build my second ship. Went a bit overboard...

The only way I could figure out how to build it was to build a portable storage ship, then fill it up and use it to craft blueprint.

I never really hit a problem before that, but my first ship was a massive portable mining vessel, so I rarely moved things around. I just sort of... Expanded.

my ship started out that way, just bolting on more and more Frankenstein's monster parts as I unlocked more blueprints and needed to get stronger, but I've started to use blueprint mode to make proper changes, its a bit of both now, like the exterior is symmetrical and looks deliberately designed, but the room and hallway placement is still a random mess on the inside :D

EDIT: No, on second thought I don't see how this would work. Doing this would technically allow invalid blueprints to be built, since you could build pieces one at a time that didn't even connect to the existing hull. A neat idea, but not viable.

+1 to this!

Agreed, the repair function has the ability to repair one part at a time, the blueprint build mode needs the ability to build one part at a time. That way, when building a complex blueprint you can tell it the critical parts that *need* to be built first, and then complete the rest as you obtain the parts or money.

The blueprint system supports this. In build mode, select 'Load ship (paste into existing)'. Then just paste it off to the side and copy/paste what you want and delete the rest.

Hold down CTRL key and the build button will light up, it now uses all mats you have availible and build till you have no mats anymore, Thus allowing you to build the ship over time in multple sections.
