Ship mechanics / internal crew wise Space Haven has much more depth.
I would like to see how a hybrid between Space Haven, Cosmoteer and X4 would look like (keeping the isometric, but maybe with Z levels).
I haven't played space haven in a while. Reminded me of that df-9 or whatever it is called game. I'm waiting for it to be finished before going back to it. DF Steam edition has my attention at the moment.
It would be nice to see a space game that does a lot right with many features fleshed out. Cosmoteer but with how ftl works inside the ship would be awesome, imo. Or take a game like x4 but add the internal ship building process from starship corporation.
Then Avorion has much more Weapons..all this grind for items is fun..because its 3D u can..place the guns better..u have the trade part the faction part and u have this flight experience where u really feel ur flying through the space...u even can watch ur other ships working and stuff..and other passivparts to improve ships, mission types and so on. And 2D Cosmoteer normaly should be easier to get more customizable stuff in there because its 2D..but guess the team behind Avorion is bigger..
Cosmoteer can..have a chance..for 2D lovers but..just with more stuff ;)
With Mods can cosmoteer be very strong but..i stopped using them..because u never know if its not outdated one day again..walt should work with them together bringing more stuff in his game ;).. or if he is afraid for balancing..then guns who are allowed for multiplayer and all the rest who are allowed for creative
What I like about Cosmoteer is that it's simpler and more straightforward. Building a ship can be done in 5 minutes. Combat is relatively simple. It's very sandboxy.
If say they're about equal in terms of quality, and the quality is good. I've enjoyed both. I'd say it's up to preference.
I put about 100 hours into Avorion. They are very similar, as you have noticed, but the big difference would be the crew and resource management in Cosmoteer. That aspect simply doesn't matter at all in Avorion, which makes it a more 'pure' ship building game since you can spend all of your resources and time just perfecting your ship and collecting loot, rather than micromanaging the internal systems.
This game is advertised as having 'factorio' style supply chain management, and that is true. Optimizing the internal layout of your ship in order to keep everything working well is a large part of the gameplay, and it uniquely rewarding when you figure it out.
If you are trying to decide what it is better for you, then look at the 2D top down part destruction and resource management aspect vs the 3D generated loot and resource discovery and gathering aspect of Avorion.
Combat wise they are nothing alike at all and can't be compared, really.
