how to rotate pieces and guns ??
i know how to flip them and even rotate them 90 degrees but how do you rotate them slightly so they are on a 45 degree angle at a slant ?

You cannot do that. Everything is a 90 degree angle.

Individual pieces can't be rotated 45 degrees, however the whole build grid can. On the right hand side above the meters for the crew and power there is an up arrow (while in the build view). If you click that, you can choose which part of the grid is considered "the front". If you exit and re-enter the build view, the grid will rotate to the alignment, allowing for diagonal ships.
