Ship movement controls
I played just for an hour but I am not sure if I want to refund.

The game looks like something I would enjoy - space, ship building, space combat and so on

But on the other hand from what I have seen, in my wooping 1 hour play through, the combat boils down to right click on enemy ship, they will pew pew in front of each other...

I hope I am missing a ton and someone can tell me more about more advanced flight controls.

Can you do evasive makeovers? Can you orbit the target? Can you control your thrust to kite?

One thing I noticed was that I could drag a cone from enemy ship but then my ship goes to one corner of that cone and it is back to pew pew by staring at each other.

If you go into direct control mode (ctrl+D), turn on cursor facing mode (ctrl+F), and switch the bindings for turning and strafing you can make your ship control as if you were playing Starsector.

This is the way! I will try it. Cheers.

I'm curious as to what others have to say, but once you have multiple ships and/or bigger ships, there's more to it.

With multiple ships, positioning becomes much more important. You will flank with purpose built ships to target specific areas and also find off other enemies that add are attracted to the fight. Choosing what items you target on the enemy ship becomes more important as they grow in size and the battles extend, and plays into the positioning above. Also, some fights can be positioned near asteroids or ship graveyards where you can position these objects to protect weak ships or juggle aggro.

But I agree with 1v1 battles, especially with the smaller ships you encounter early on. Its fairly one dimensional at that stage.

I think the intent is that the battle is mostly won in the ship design first, team tactics second, and actual piloting third.

In addition to direct control there is, in fact, an entire set of advanced ship commands that make all sorts of fun movement possible. Iirc you can unlock it by viewing one of the tutorials (I don't remember which one though), or toggling a setting (I think it's in the general tab).

I will spend one more hour trying to figure this out. I checked the manual control and it is OKish but I wold rather prefer the advanced ship commands.

Some sort of things that lets my position better armored part of the ship while I am backing off while having another ship trying to sneak in from behind.

From what you have said I think this is possible.

look up how to have multiple ships if you want to spice up the space combat
