Normally one could argue you don't have the space to pick them up (and they arguably might still be fairly hostile to you as well), but it's kinda annoying if you've lost some crew yourself and gotta go back find the next trader/station to recruit some new people even tho there are a bunch floating around you already.
No seriously, I would not like such a mechanic. Not without a deeper complexity where you have to treat them a bit like in Rimworld where it takes a long time until they want to really work for you. A prison module where after a specific time there is a chance that the prisoner becomes loyal or not on the other hand would make sense maybe.
But better just a prison where you can sell the prisoners to their home faction for some money.
You just want to do what already exists just with another step.
Exactly, who would want to join the crew of a ship that just blew up your own ship. It's far better to suffocate silently in space as your oxygen is running out. /sarc
As to why bring them back to the station? Maybe for additional bounty? I do agree that it would be nice to be able to fill up crew slots without having to go back to a station or flagging down a neutral ship.
There's real world precedence for this. Pirate ships would often force captured crew to serve on their ships. Pirates tended to also be more lax with rules and have more amenities to keep their sailors happy as well.
It might help to think about it this way: You can slowly suffocate in space or haul batteries and ammunition on another ship that had just out performed the one you were on.
A good way to handle this might be allowing you to press gang enemy crew into your ship, but the moment you get near a friendly station, they'll jump out the nearest hatch and make a break for it. This would allow you to shore up on crew after a battle, but wouldn't be too OP as they leave at the first opportunity. Could also be a nice outlaw roleplay mechanic.
Only fanatics for their 'cause' would jump out the airlock (or be tossed out for misbehavior).
I do recognize that this is a circumvention of the fame mechanics but perhaps the fame mechanic needs some rebalancing/reworking. Something there feels off to me.
Another solution could be to have prison bunks. You can take these back to the station for a higher bounty/reward or you can hire them. That is, convince them to join your crew with a discounted price of sorts or something.
