Mining several thousands of iron and having to drag each Steel pile out of the factory when it fills up, feels needlesly tedious to say the least.
Also the above doesn't work in practise because you then lock that pile from having anything else = BAD.
I tried to setup two way points to transfer goods but they don't move the finished products out and this efgfectively halts production even though you sit on a mountain of iron for example.
So it'd be good if they input a button to say if the crew should move it or no.
If you want to know why it is like it is, it is better then making an ammo factory, start it up, look away for a bit, return to see you have no room for any thing now because its all ammo all over the place.
Every factory would be fighting to fill up every available spot you have if it was not like this forcing you to turn your factories on and off to save on cargo space.
easy fix and i bet in the background it kinda already works like this anyways meaning they only have to bring it up to a user interface and control level
In my screenshot I set up a storage for metal, metal plates, copper, and coils in there own spot. Extras and everything else goes to the unset storage's.
If you do not see a URL at the top go to steam at the top left, settings, interface, and turn on
display web address bars when available.
Can also turn on screenshot uploader after you close a game in steam, settings, cloud, and turn on open the screenshot uploader after closing a game if screenshots were taken.

When you select "Manage Resources" and then click on a factory, two little inverted "U"'s with arrows appear. One is to automatically deliver (resources TO). The other is to automatically supply (fnished goods=>storage). Green (for resources) / Blue (for goods) is on. Red is Off.
I had selected my "automatically supply" inverted-U to off (RED). Clicking it back to blue solved ALL my problems. Finished goods were now automatically removed to any available free storage. Note: I didn't have to fiddle with anything else, no supply chains, no forcing storage squares to only allow a certain good, no mucking with my worker priorities. Give this a shot and see if it works for you.
What works quite well is setting up a simple supply chain. A supply chain between a fabricator and a storage will cause the crew to fill all empty places in that storage with the output of the fabricator.
