Is there no save system?

Last night, my son played this game up through the third boss battle. Today, he tried to continue, but the game is starting at the very beginning.

What's the point of adding a Continue option if there is no save? Or are we missing something?

It's a little confusing, but the continue option is part of the pause screen, not the main menu as it might seem. For whatever reason it's possible to pause the game on the title screen.
